An air conditioning system for use in an over-the-road or off road vehicle is provided that provides a method of operation during both engine on and engine off conditions. The method operates the air conditioning system at one capacity when the engine is running, and at a second capacity when the engine is not running. The selection of these capacities is based on the power capacity of the source of electric power from which the air conditioning system is operated. When a storage battery is used to power the air conditioning system during engine off conditions, the second capacity is lower than the capacity at which the system is operated when the engine is running.

A heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) system for use in an over-the-road or off road vehicle is provided. The HVAC system may be operated regardless of the operational state of the engine. That is, the HVAC system may be operated to condition the interior compartments of an over-the-road vehicle while the engine is running and while the engine is in a no-idle (off) condition. In general, the HVAC system efficiently shares one or more typical air conditionings components with those already found in the vehicle. In one instance, the HVAC system operates an electrically-driven compressor when a belt-driven compressor is idle. In another case, the HVAC system operates both an electrically-driven compressor and a no-idle condenser when a belt-driven compressor and condenser are idle. In yet another embodiment, the HVAC system shares an evaporator.

Vehicle air conditioning and heating system providing engine on and off operation

An air conditioning system for use in a motor vehicle powered by an internal combustion engine is described. The system comprises an electric motor powered by a battery; a compressor arranged to be powered by at least one of the internal combustion engine and the electric motor; and a control unit that controls the driving of the compressor. The control unit is configured to execute driving the compressor by only the electric motor when the combustion engine is under an idling stop; restarting the combustion engine upon expiration of a first given time from the time when the idling stop has occurred, so that thereafter the compressor is driven by both the combustion engine and the electric motor; and stopping the driving of the compressor by the electric motor upon expiration of a second given time from the restarting of the combustion engine, so that thereafter the compressor is driven by only the combustion engine.

The technique of the present invention reduces or even omits potential shocks and vibrations arising due to the coupling action of a coupling mechanism at the time of starting an internal combustion engine, and ensures a quick restart of the internal combustion engine. In a vehicle with an idling stop control apparatus of the present invention mounted thereon, a control unit inputs an inverted phase current Eon, which is determined according to the energy absorbing state of a transmission belt, into an auxiliary machinery driving electric motor, so as to brake rotations of the auxiliary machinery driving electric motor. After the input of the inverted phase current Eon into the auxiliary machinery driving electric motor, the control unit couples an electromagnetic clutch to link a crankshaft of the internal combustion engine with the auxiliary machinery driving electric motor. The value of the inverted phase current Eon is varied according to the energy absorbing state of the transmission belt. The braking force of the auxiliary machinery driving electric motor is thus varied according to the energy absorbing state of the transmission belt.

An electric air conditioner sustain system is disclosed. The electric air conditioner sustain system includes a compressor, an engine and an electric motor. The engine and the electric motor selectively rotate the compressor. When the engine is rotating the compressor and the engine stops, the electric motor is synchronously activated to maintain continuous rotation of the compressor.

The compressor (3) of the refrigerating fluid circuit is driven by the thermal engine (1) of the vehicle when the latter is functioning and, when parked, by the alternator (2). The latter, fed with three-phase current from an auxiliary battery (10) so as to function as a motor, and the compressor (3), are then disconnected from the crankshaft (20) by a free-wheel mechanism (7). The preliminary air conditioning of the vehicle when parked is thus provided without a special electric motor for driving the compressor, with reduced expenditure of energy by virtue of the feeding of the alternator with three-phase current, and without any risk of exhaustion of the main battery by virtue of the auxiliary battery (10).

The air conditioning system includes a compressor (3) of the refrigerant fluid circuit which is driven by the internal combustion engine (1) of the vehicle when it is running, and by the alternator (2) when the engine is not running. The alternator is supplied by a three-phase current from an auxiliary battery (10), and the compressor is disengaged from the crankshaft (20) by a freewheel mechanism (7). Pre-conditioning of the air in the vehicle is possible by use of the alternator drive mechanism, without risk of discharging the main battery which is used to start the engine.
