Abstract: The authors have developed a standardised approach to signal acquisition. The result is the tool presented in this communication, which has the following characteristics: (a) a constant command is used to process an acquisition. That syntax is independent of the A/D card and the programming language used (b) the applications can be commanded from different high-level languages (C, Pascal, ...) using the same basic commands, or from spreadsheets such as Lotus 123. (c) old applications can support new A/D hardware without any change to the code. (d) applications written with a portable language like C can be transferred on other operating systems. The possibilities of the system are illustrated by comparing short applications for the recording of EMGs under muscle relaxant anaesthesia.
