BPMN: An introduction to the standard

Business process modeling has become an important tool for managing organizational change and for capturing requirements of software. A central problem in this area is the fact that the acquisition of as-is models consumes up to 60% of the time spent on process management projects. This is paradox as there are often extensive documentations available in companies, but not in a ready-to-use format. In this paper, we tackle this problem based on an automatic approach to generate BPMN models from natural language text. We combine existing tools from natural language processing in an innovative way and augmented them with a suitable anaphora resolution mechanism. The evaluation of our technique shows that for a set of 47 text-model pairs from industry and textbooks, we are able to generate on average 77% of the models correctly.

This chapter sets out some of the core problems and opportunities facing the digital healthcare sector. Healthcare is all about communication. Large investments in digital health have failed to live up to expectations, partly due to poor interoperability. Patient centered care requires a new approach, organized primarily for patient benefi t, not just for provider organizations. What matters most is the point of care, which is inevitably complex. Many lessons can be learnt from past experience, successes and failures.

Principles of Health Interoperability

This paper describes a diagrammatic approach to the formal verification of web-services composition. We present a set of graphical composition rules that map to proof steps in Classical Linear Logic (CLL) and can be used to drive the proof assistant HOL Light purely through interactive, diagrammatic reasoning. The end result is a verified, workflow-like diagram that provides a visual account of the composition process and of the information flow between the services making up the composite service. Our approach thus removes the need to interact directly with HOL Light and provides a mean of visualising and carrying out the whole verification process at an intuitive, yet fully rigorous, level.

Diagrammatically-Driven formal verification of web-services composition

To achieve a systematic and holistic analysis and improvement of an engineering design process, the thesis on “A Structural Measurement System for Engineering Design Processes” proposes a measurement system that makes use of complexity metrics to embody various patterns of the interplay of a process’ entities (e.g. tasks, documents, organizational units, etc.). These metrics are used to draw inferences about the process’ behavior (e.g. timeliness, need for communication, risks, etc.). The 52 metrics are supported by a meta-model for process modeling and a framework to select the metrics in accordance with the goals of the process analysis. The metrics embody the foundations of network theory and the management of structural complexity to generate a practice-oriented application.
