A system and method for wireless communication between a plurality of subscriber units and a base station, the base station communicating information signals from an originating source to a destination subscriber unit over a channel at an assigned one of a plurality of frequencies using repetitive time frames, each said time frame comprising a sequence of time slots. The channel is defined as having the same one or more time slots from the sequence of time slots in one or more of the time frames. The base station includes a central processing unit capable of assigning a duration of time for the information signals being sent to the destination subscriber unit. The duration equals the duration of one or more time slots in the same frame. The central processing unit maintains a memory of which time slots of each time frame have been assigned and provides the time slot assignment, and therefore channel assignment, by consulting said memory. The system includes a multiplexer for multiplexing the information signals onto the assigned channel; and a transmitter for transmitting the information signals to the destination subscriber unit using the assigned channel.

Subscriber RF telephone system for providing multiple speech and/or data signals simultaneously over either a single or a plurality of RF channels

A system and method of pushing user-selected data items from a host system to a user's mobile data communication device upon detecting the occurrence of one or more user-defined event triggers is provided. The user may then move (or file) the data items to a particular folder within a folder hierarchy stored in the mobile data communication device, or may execute some other system operation on the data item. Software operating at the mobile device and the host system then synchronizes the folder hierarchy of the mobile device with a folder hierarchy of the host system, and any actions executed on the data items at the mobile device are then automatically replicated on the same data items stored at the host system, thus eliminating the need for the user to manually replicate actions at the host system that have been executed at the mobile data communication device.

System and Method for Pushing Information from a Host System to a Mobile Data Communication Device

In a data communication system capable of variable rate transmission, high rate packet data transmission improves utilization of the forward link and decreases the transmission delay. Data transmission on the forward link is time multiplexed and the base station transmits at the highest data rate supported by the forward link at each time slot to one mobile station. The data rate is determined by the largest C/I measurement of the forward link signals as measured at the mobile station. Upon determination of a data packet received in error, the mobile station transmits a NACK message back to the base station. The NACK message results in retransmission of the data packet received in error. The data packets can be transmitted out of sequence by the use of sequence number to identify each data unit within the data packets.

Method and apparatus for high-rate packet data transmission

Methods are provided for treating a subject for a condition by modulating at least a portion of the subject's autonomic nervous system. In accordance with certain embodiments of the subject methods, at least a portion of a subject's autonomic nervous system is electrically or pharmacologically modulated in a manner that is effective to treat the subject for the condition. The subject methods find use in the treatment of a variety of different conditions, where such conditions include various disease conditions. Also provided are systems and kits for use in practicing the subject methods.

Techniques to implement MBMS services in a wireless communication system. In one aspect, a method is provided for processing data for transmission to a plurality of terminals. Frames of information bits (which may have variable rates) are provided to a buffer implementing a matrix. The matrix is padded with padding bits based on a particular padding scheme to support variable frame rates. The frames are then coded based on a particular block code to provide parity bits. The frame of information bits and the parity bits are then transmitted to the terminals. In another aspect, a method is provided for controlling the transmit power of a data transmission to a plurality of terminals. In accordance with the method, TPC streams are received from the terminals and processed to obtain a stream of joint power control commands used to adjust the transmit power of the data transmission.

Multi-media broadcast and multicast service (MBMS) in a wireless communication system

The invention provides for path optimization for routing of a communication session in a network having a plurality of core networks (110) coupled to a plurality of access networks (120). Both a core network and an access network perform the path optimization by determining a plurality of possible paths to a plurality of target access points to form a target matrix, determining a corresponding route preference factor for each possible path of the target matrix, and selecting, from the target matrix, a possible path having an optimal route preference factor. An overall or complete path, for routing of the communication session, is then determined either by combining the selected possible paths, or by selecting one possible path as a complete path. The route preference factor, for each possible path, is determined based upon various routing variables, such as quality of service, bandwidth for the communication session, route complexity, interconnect cost, routing cost; resource loading, resource availability, and operator preference for traffic biasing.

Segmented and distributed path optimization in a communication network

In one embodiment a system is provided for multirate communications allowing for different data rates for each data unit on a channel, including both data units from different mobile units and from the same mobile unit. A sending unit (102) preferably begins by determining the rate at which to start communications, and monitors, for example by use of an RSSI detector (106), for an indication that the rate should be changed. A rate adjustor (105) implements the change, and can make changes as frequently as every data unit. The encoder (104) applies the appropriate rate and inserts a rate indicator (202) indicative of the data or encoding rate, and sends the data unit (107). On receiving data units, the receiving unit (110) first determines the rate for each data unit or group of units, then appropriately decodes the data unit(s). As a result, the actual data throughput can be adjusted to permit optimized throughput.

Method and apparatus for multirate data communications

A telephone system for providing communications between mobile radiotelephones, portable radiotelephones and landline telephones includes a land-line telephone system including a land-line switching network for providing communication paths for land-line telephones and a mobile radiotelephone system for providing communications paths for mobile and portable radiotelephones. The mobile radiotelephone system includes a digital switching network, base stations, and PCM analog-to-digital (A/D) and digital-to-analog (D/A) converters interposed between the base stations and the digital switching network and between the land-line switching network and the digital switching network. Analog ports are interfaced by the PCM A/D and D/A converters to incoming and outgoing serial bit streams coded according to pulse-code-modulation (PCM) techniques standardized for telecommunications systems by the International Telegraph and Telephone Consultative Committee (CCITT). The digital switching network receives the incoming serial PCM bit streams and provides the outgoing serial PCM bit streams so that telephone calls are automatically routed between the calling and called parties in the telephone system. Supervisory signalling is detected from the incoming serial PCM bit streams and processed by a signal processing computer to determine an ordering of time slots for the PCM channels for controlling the interchange of PCM channels from the incoming serial PCM bit streams to the outgoing serial PCM bit streams. Supervisory signalling for outgoing PCM channels corresponding to the incoming supervisory signalling from incoming PCM channels is adapted to to a pre-established format recognized by the corresponding outgoing PCM channels and multiplexed into the respective outgoing serial PCM bit streams.

A method in a wireless communications device including obtaining timing advance, for example, by determining ( 430 ) timing advance based on a distance of the wireless device from a base transceiver station. In some embodiments, the timing advance and corresponding location information is stored in a look-up table on the wireless device. The look-up table data may be populated or updated from timing advance information generated on the wireless device and/or obtained from some other source. In some embodiments, the wireless device transmits a modified access or normal burst when using a timing advance determined on the wireless communications device.
