TL;DR: In this article, a distinction between fundamental and derived senses of literacy is drawn to show that scientific literacy tends to attend to the derived sense but tend to neglect the fundamental sense, and that such notions fail to address a central component of scientific literacy.

Interpreting pragmatic meaning when reading popular reports of science

TL;DR: The authors found that one half of the students correctly understood the scientific status and role of statements when that understanding required contextualized interpretation on the basis of the relationships among statements in the reports.
