Many programs have been developed to help schools enhance students' health and reduce the prevalence of drug use, violence, and high-risk sexual behaviors. How should educators choose among these? This article describes selection criteria based on theory, research, and best educational practice that identify key social and emotional learning (SEL) competencies and program features. The SEL competencies for students include 17 skills and attitudes organized into four groups: awareness of self and others; positive attitudes and values; responsible decision making; and social interaction skills. The 11 program features critical to the success of school-based SEL programs emphasize curriculum design, coordination with larger systems, educator preparation and support, and program evaluation. Developed by the Collaborative to Advance Social and Emotional Learning (CASEL), the SEL framework can be used to guide selection of research-based prevention programs that address health, substance abuse, violence prevention, sexuality, character, and social skills.

The Positive Psychology of Emotional Intelligence

Emotional education is an educational innovation which has as an objective to answer to the social needs not attended into ordinary education. The foundations of emotional education can multiple intelligence theory, emotional intelligence, flow, progressive education movement, psychological education, health education, social skills, subjective well-being, etc. As an example of theory we present the reversal theory. The objective of emotiona education is the development of emotional competence: emotional conscience, emotional regulation, selfmanagement, interpersonal intelligence, life skills and subjective well-being. The practice of emotional education implies the design of programs based on a theory, with the training of the teachers who will implement them; we need curricular materials to support the teacher task; to evaluate the programs we need instruments and strategies, etc. This article is the result of the work of the GROP (Grupo de Recerca en Orientacio Psicopedagogica) of the Department MIDE of the University of Barcelona.

This critical cultural analysis of trends in the field of social emotional learning (SEL) in the United States considers how ideas concerning emotional skills and competencies have informed programmatic discourse. While currently stressing links between SEL and academic achievement, program literature also places emphasis on ideals of caring, community, and diversity. However, recommended practices across programs tend to undermine these ideals by focusing on emotional and behavioral control strategies that privilege individualist models of self. SEL in practice thus becomes another way to focus attention on measurement and remediation of individual deficits rather than a way to redirect educators’ focus toward the relational contexts of classrooms and schools.
