A plunger (106) introduces a dose of powdered medecine into the chamber so that all powder particles are available for intermixing disaggregation and comminution. An aperture (51) receives a first stream of air and passes it towards the mouthpiece for inhalation by the user. A wall (11) has at least one aperture (59) for diverting a portion of a main air stream into the aerosolizing chamber to mix with the particles to form a fine, low density, low velocity, dry mist of powdered medecine for inhalation by the user.

A dry powder inhaler comprises a main airflow path including a cyclone chamber (16) having an air inlet and being so shaped that at least a part of the chamber decreases in cross-sectional area in a direction away from the air inlet, so as thereby in use to set up a reverse flow cyclone in the chamber. A bypass airflow path (8) bypasses the cyclone chamber and the main and bypass airflow paths communicate with a mouthpiece (6). The cyclone chamber may be provided by a part (22) which is removable from the rest of the inhaler for regular replacement thereof.

The device is easy to manufacture, provides a pre-metered single unit dose, it is relatively easy to use, and can be reusable or disposable.

Dry powder inhaler and system for drug delivery

Methods are provided for drying a particle. Specifically, there is provided a spray-dried diketopiperazine-insulin particle formulation having improved aerodynamic performance and in which the active agent is more stabile and efficiently delivered as compared to that of the lyophilized diketopiperazine-insulin formulation. The dry powders have utility as pharmaceutical formulations for pulmonary delivery.

Method for Improving the Pharmaceutic Properties of Microparticles Comprising Diketopiperazine and an Active Agent

A dose tape for use in a dry powder inhaler has blisters formed in a formpack layer. A lidstock layer is permanently attached over the formpack layer, to seal a dose of dry powder within each of the blisters. A tear strip is attached to the lidstock layer over each of the blisters. The dose tape is provided in a coil within an inhaler having a breath actuated tape advance blister opening system. Moving a dustcap off of a mouthpiece into an open position places the tape advance/blister opening system into a ready condition. When the patient inhales on the mouthpiece, the tape advance/blister opening system is triggered. The blister or dose tape is advanced by one increment, and a blister is automatically opened. Pulling on the tear strip shears out an area of the lidstock over the blister, unsealing the powder contents. Airflow through an air path in the inhaler, generated by inhalation, carries the powder to a disbursion chamber, or directly to the mouthpiece, for inhalation by the patient.

A unit dose dry powder inhaler (20) includes a chamber housing (100) containing a powder dispersion chamber (45). A chamber tube (40) extends from the dispersion chamber into the mouthpiece (32). A cover or cup (26) is rotatably attached to chamber housing. A dose of a dry powder (92) is contained at a powder location (74) in the chamber housing. An air passageway leading from the powder location to the dispersion chamber is closed off by the cover. When the cover is rotated to an open position, the air passageway is opened. The user inhales on the mouthpiece drawing air through the powder location, the air passageway, the dispersion chamber and the chamber tube, through the mouthpiece and into the users lungs. The unit dose of dry powder is stored directly in, or is part of, the inhaler.

The invention comprises: one layer in the form of a strip (152), a plurality of blisters (160) which are formed in the strip layer (152), a dose of a pharmaceutical compound in each of said blisters (160), a cover layer (154) which is fixed to the strip layer (152) and which seals off the dose inside each blister (160), and a tear tape (158) which is fixed to the cover layer (154) on each of the blisters (160).
