Influence of Living Arrangements on the Psychological Health of Older Women in Slums

Assessment of blood perfusion from superficial layers would aid in monitoring the microcirculation and help diagnose numerous diseases involving altered microcirculation. Diffuse optical correlation spectroscopy looks at the correlation between temporal statistics of backscattered intensity from tissue surface upon illumination and has been a promising tool for tissue vascularity assessment. This work uses diffuse correlation spectroscopy operated in short source-to-detector separation to quantify microcirculation. Finite element models and simulations are validated with in-vitro skin flow models. The comparison returned a high correlation between the simulation and experimental models, proving short-range DCS's capability in assessing microcirculation.

Background: Globally, more than 300 million people of all ages suffer from depression. With an ageing population, depression among the elderly is likely to increase in the coming years, with higher prevalence among the elderly people than that in the general adult population. This study was intended to know the prevalence of depression and factors associated with depression among elderly people.Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted in the urban field practice area of Navodaya Medical College, Raichur. A pre-designed and pre-tested questionnaire was used to interview the elderly person, after taking verbal consent. Depression was assessed using geriatric depression scale (short version). The study duration was from 1st September 2018 – 31st December, 2018 with 360 sample size.Results: Out of 360 elderly people, the prevalence of depression was found to be 31.4 %. The prevalence of depression was more in females 31.9% (63 out of 197). Significant association of depression was noted with age, socio-economic status, marital status, type of family, education and occupation with p<0.05.Conclusions: Around 1/3rd of the study participants were found to be suffering from depression. Depression was significantly associated with age, illiteracy, nuclear family, dependent on family members. Family support to the elderly population may prevent depression.

Study on depression among elderly people in an urban slum of Raichur

Diffuse correlation spectroscopy (DCS) is an evolving optical modality that provides a fast, non-invasive, portable alternative to costly medical diagnostics in quantifying the blood flow. DCS involves monitoring the temporal statistics of scattered light from the sample, upon illumination by a coherent source. The detected signal is related to RBC motion, and blood flow is derived combining a model for photon propagation through the target tissue with the experimental observations. Conventionally, blood flow index (BFI) is calculated for long source-detector separations (SDS), that quantifies the blood flow from deeper tissue layers. Reduced SDS is required in measuring perfusion for immediate tissue subsurface, which is important in monitoring related changes. Here, we investigate the application of short-range DCS for skin blood flow monitoring and demonstrate the capability in determining BFI from immediate subsurface. Bilayer skin tissue with embedded micro vessels was modelled using finite element methods (FEM). Time correlated light diffusion equation was solved for this tissue geometry, with a point source illumination and autocorrelation plots were generated. Our in-silico analysis illustrates the change in BFI for varying blood flow rate and capillary depth from the skin surface. The work performed here, after experimental validation, is expected to have the potential for non-invasive quantitative blood flow assessment and can aid in diagnosing related skin disorders.

Immediate subsurface skin blood flow monitoring using diffuse correlation spectroscopy: finite element simulations

Background: HIV continues to be a major global public health issue, having claimed more than 32
million lives so far. Medical and nursing students are future health care workers. Thus, medical and
nursing students should be provided with detailed knowledge about HIV and related issues in order to provide high quality,
nonjudgmental services that will engage key populations at risk of HIV. Study is done to estimate the awareness regarding
HIV/AIDS among medical and nursing students and to compare the awareness associated with HIV/AIDS among medical and
nursing students. Material and Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 259 medical and nursing students
from a tertiary care hospital in Raichur city between 1st October 2019 to 31st January 2020, using a pre-designed, semi-
structured questionnaire, after taking consent, the questionnaire was distributed to students which were answered by self
administration. Qualitative data was analyzed using Chi-square test and independent sample t test. Results: Out of 259
students, majority 160 (61.78%) belong to age 18 years, 147 (56.76%) were male, 212 (81.85%) were Hindus. 197 (76.06%)
students were not attended any training programme on HIV/AIDS. Difference was found in medical and nursing students of
their knowledge and Practices scores were statistically signicant i.e., P < 0.05.Conclusion: The medical students have high
knowledge and practice scores compared to nursing students.

Comparing awareness about hiv/aids infection among medical and nursing students in a tertiary care hospital: a cross sectional study.

Cancer is one of the main problems in the India and world also. From the world health organization report (2022), 10 million deaths in the year of 2022 of the entire world. This reflects one in six deaths. Side effects are very common in the cancer treatment process i.e. chemotherapy, radiotherapy and chemo radiation therapy. Proper knowledge is required in these aspects. Sometimes these side effects lead to life threatening due to lack of knowledge on side effects management while patients are in the home. These patients also need counseling, consultation and about side effects management of their treatment. This counselling leads to not only the patient’s quality of life but also improve the patients’ psychological conditions during their treatment process.  In our prospective observational study, the main objectives are checking the effectiveness of before counselling and after counselling with respect to patient’s side effect management and psychological effectiveness. Finally evaluate the outcome with the counselling in both breast and cervical cancer patients. We provide counseling for cancer patients in King George Hospital, Visakhapatnam, India. In our study we used EORTC QLQ – C30 (version 3) scale for comparison of with or without counseling in the areas of side effect management, effectiveness of psychological and nutritional in breast and cervical cancer patients. Finally in our study we noticed that mostly rural area and some urban people were lack of knowledge on side effect management of cancer treatment. By providing better counseling to these patients especially in rural area people for their treatment and create awareness of cancer in group counseling for care givers then automatically better side effect management was possible in cancer patients. Pharmacist counseling is one of the important services that has been associated with improved outcome.
