
 Flow in streams and rivers typically erodes the banks, causing channel bank migration laterally, resulting in loss of nearby land, modification in channel morphology, excessive sediment transport, and water quality degradation. A spur dike is a hydraulic structure placed at the channel bank projecting outward to guide or divert the flow away from the bank, thus protecting it from erosion. The stability of the riverbed and banks is influenced by turbulent characteristics such as three-dimensional velocity distribution, turbulent kinetic energy, Reynolds shear stress, turbulent intensity, and bed shear stress. The researchers found that these turbulence parameters are instrumental in sediment movement along the channel's bed and from its banks. Spurs dikes are a significant river training structure provided along the river bank to protect from erosion. Several aspects related to spur dikes, such as their geometry, physical features, design considerations, flow and scour patterns, etc., are critically reviewed in this paper. Despite the numbers of literature in the field of turbulent characteristics and scour depth around spur dike, the role of vegetation and the effect of seepage around spur dike still remains an unexplored area. These knowledge gaps of spur dikes in field conditions are discussed for future studies.

Flow behaviour concerning bank stability in the presence of spur dike- a review

In this study we carried out laboratory experiments to investigate the three-dimensional turbulent flows around a spur dike installed in a straight open channel flume. The experiments are conducted under the two different Froude numbers, 0.100 and 0.185. The three-dimensional instantaneous velocities are measured using the Acoustic Doppler Velocimetry (ADV) to obtain the time-averaged velocities and the turbulence stresses. The measured flow field reveal the existence of the recirculation zones downstream of the dike, which is characterized by high turbulence stresses near its boundaries. The results show that although the overall mean flow patterns between the low and high Froude number cases are very similar to each other, there exist moderate changes in the maximum dimensionless turbulence stresses and the maximum dimensionless bed shear stress with the increase of the Froude number.

Flume experiments for turbulent flow around a spur dike

In order to assess the hydraulic effects of flow pattern changes and geomorphological evolution around spur dikes, this study carried out monitoring and numerical simulation on the changes of morphologic characteristics around spur dikes that settled in the bend of the Yeongcheon River. The study site spanned 190 m, and spur dikes were installed in March 2008. Monitoring of the site started in May 2008 and was completed in April 2014. When the water level was higher than the height of the spur dikes, the spur dikes extrude flow from the bank. Therefore, the spur dikes that were built to stabilize the channel have been effectively performing hydraulic functions. With the passing of time, the channel was stabilized and pools formed around the spur dike toes by local scouring. It was confirmed that spur dikes created various physical characteristics in the aspect of channel topography, with sediments deposits occurring between the spur dikes, while riffles and pools formed in the channel.

Superelevation and Bed Variation Due to Attack Angle of Submerged Vanes in Curved Channel

Groyne to control the direction and velocity of flow in rivers is generally installed for the purpose of protecting riverbanks or embankments from erosion caused by running water. In particular, as interest in river restoration and natural river improvement increases, groynes are proposed as a key hydraulic structure for local flow control and riparian habitat establishment. Groynes are installed mainly in groups rather than as individual structures. In case of groynes installed as a group, flow around the groynes change according to spacing in between the groynes. Therefore, groyne spacing is regarded as the most important factor in groyne design. This study aimed at examining changes of flows around and within the area of groynes that take place according to the spacing of groynes installed in order to propose the optimal spacing for upward groynes. To examine flow characteristics around groynes, this study looked at flows in main flow area and recirculation flow area separately. In main flow area, it examined the impact of flow velocity increasing as a result of conveyance reduction that is exerted on river bed stability in relation to changes in the maximum flow velocity according to installation spacing. As a factor causing impacts on scouring and sedimentation within the area of groynes, recirculation flow in the groyne area can lead problems concerning flow within the area and stability of embankment. As for recirculation area, an analysis was conducted on the scale of rotational flow and the flow around embankment that exerts impacts on stability of the embankment. In addition, a compara- tive analysis was carried with reference to changes of the central point of rotational flow that occur within the area of groynes. As a result of compositely examining the results, the appropriate installation spacing is proposed as min. four times-max. six times considering a decrease in flow velocity according to the installation of upward groynes, river bed stability and stability of embankments against counterflow within the area of groynes.
