Clustering in sensor networks

Hot spots in a wireless sensor network emerge as locations under heavy traffic load. Nodes in such areas quickly deplete energy resources, leading to disruption in network services. This problem is common for data collection scenarios in which Cluster Heads (CH) have a heavy burden of gathering and relaying information. The relay load on CHs especially intensifies as the distance to the sink decreases. To balance the traffic load and the energy consumption in the network, the CH role should be rotated among all nodes and the cluster sizes should be carefully determined at different parts of the network. This paper proposes a distributed clustering algorithm, Energy-efficient Clustering (EC), that determines suitable cluster sizes depending on the hop distance to the data sink, while achieving approximate equalization of node lifetimes and reduced energy consumption levels. We additionally propose a simple energy-efficient multihop data collection protocol to evaluate the effectiveness of EC and calculate the end-to-end energy consumption of this protocol; yet EC is suitable for any data collection protocol that focuses on energy conservation. Performance results demonstrate that EC extends network lifetime and achieves energy equalization more effectively than two well-known clustering algorithms, HEED and UCR.

An Energy-Efficient Clustering Solution for Wireless Sensor Networks

Wireless sensor networks can be deployed in any attended or unattended environments like environmental monitoring, agriculture, military, health care etc., where the sensor nodes forward the sensing data to the gateway node. As the sensor node has very limited battery power and cannot be recharged after deployment, it is very important to design a secure, effective and light weight user authentication and key agreement protocol for accessing the sensed data through the gateway node over insecure networks. Most recently, Turkanovic et?al. proposed a light weight user authentication and key agreement protocol for accessing the services of the WSNs environment and claimed that the same protocol is efficient in terms of security and complexities than related existing protocols. In this paper, we have demonstrated several security weaknesses of the Turkanovic et?al. protocol. Additionally, we have also illustrated that the authentication phase of the Turkanovic et?al. is not efficient in terms of security parameters. In order to fix the above mentioned security pitfalls, we have primarily designed a novel architecture for the WSNs environment and basing upon which a proposed scheme has been presented for user authentication and key agreement scheme. The security validation of the proposed protocol has done by using BAN logic, which ensures that the protocol achieves mutual authentication and session key agreement property securely between the entities involved. Moreover, the proposed scheme has simulated using well popular AVISPA security tool, whose simulation results show that the protocol is SAFE under OFMC and CL-AtSe models. Besides, several security issues informally confirm that the proposed protocol is well protected in terms of relevant security attacks including the above mentioned security pitfalls. The proposed protocol not only resists the above mentioned security weaknesses, but also achieves complete security requirements including specially energy efficiency, user anonymity, mutual authentication and user-friendly password change phase. Performance comparison section ensures that the protocol is relatively efficient in terms of complexities. The security and performance analysis makes the system so efficient that the proposed protocol can be implemented in real-life application.

A secure light weight scheme for user authentication and key agreement in multi-gateway based wireless sensor networks

Wireless sensor network (WSN) systems are typically composed of thousands of sensors that are powered by limited energy resources. To extend the networks longevity, clustering techniques have been introduced to enhance energy efficiency. This paper presents a survey on clustering over the last two decades. Existing protocols are analyzed from a quality of service (QoS) perspective including three common objectives, those of energy efficiency, reliable communication and latency awareness. This review reveals that QoS aware clustering demands more attention. Furthermore, there is a need to clarify how to improve quality of user experience (QoE) through clustering. Understanding the users’ requirements is critical in intelligent systems for the purpose of enabling the ability of supporting diverse scenarios. User awareness or user oriented design is one remaining challenging problem in clustering. In additional, this paper discusses the potential challenges of implementing clustering schemes to Internet of Things (IoT) systems in 5G networks. We indicate that clustering techniques enhanced with smart network selection solutions could highly benefit the QoS and QoE in IoT. As the current studies for WSNs are conducted either in homogeneous or low level heterogeneous networks, they are not ideal or even not able to function in highly dynamic IoT systems with a large range of user scenarios. Moreover, when 5G is finally realized, the problem will become more complex than that in traditional simplified WSNs. Several challenges related to applying clustering techniques to IoT in 5G environment are presented and discussed.

Clustering Objectives in Wireless Sensor Networks: A Survey and Research Direction Analysis

Due to the imbalance of energy consumption of nodes in wireless sensor networks (WSNs), some local nodes die prematurely, which causes the network partitions and then shortens the lifetime of the network. The phenomenon is called “hot spot” or “energy hole” problem. For this problem, an energy-aware distributed unequal clustering protocol (EADUC) in multihop heterogeneous WSNs is proposed. Compared with the previous protocols, the cluster heads obtained by EADUC can achieve balanced energy, good distribution, and seamless coverage for all the nodes.Moreover, the complexity of time and control message is low. Simulation experiments show that EADUC can prolong the lifetime of the network significantly.

An Energy-Efficient Distributed Unequal Clustering Protocol for Wireless Sensor Networks

In wireless ad-hoc networks, there are several characteristics different with wired networks. The differences are changing of network topology, limited resources like bandwidth and energy and so on. In these days as the energy issue becomes more important, it is required to research about the efficient resource allocation methods optimized in wireless networks. In the paper, we improve LAR (Location-Aided Routing) which is one of the most famous location based routing methods. This kind of technique uses information about the location of mobile node through GPS technique. Our new protocol considers both areas of routing and energy. At first, propose a more efficient routing method which minimizes the spread of unnecessary control messages. Secondly, an energy aware method is proposed to select proper transmission power by the distance between nodes. And finally, we make a new function to select next hop which considers both of distance and energy. The result of simulation shows that performance of lifetime is improved about 12% compared with LAR.

Energy aware Routing in Location based ad-hoc networks

Wireless sensor networks are consisted of hundreds or thousands of small sensors that have limited resources. Energy-efficient techniques are the main issue of wireless sensor networks. This paper proposes an energy efficient agent-based framework in wireless sensor networks. We adopt biologically inspired approaches for wireless sensor networks. Agent operates automatically with their behavior policies as a gene. Agent aggregates other agents to reduce communication and gives high priority to nodes that have enough energy to communicate. Agent behavior policies are optimized by genetic operation at the base station. Simulation results show that our proposed framework increases the lifetime of each node. Each agent selects a next-hop node with neighbor information and behavior policies. Our proposed framework provides self-healing, self-configuration, self-optimization properties to sensor nodes. Agent-based Framework for Energy Efficiency in Wireless Sensor Networks

In this letter, we propose a new energy efficient online routing algorithm for QoS-sensitive sensor networks. An important design principle underlying our algorithm is online decision making based on real time network estimation. This on-line approach gives adaptability and flexibility to solve a wide range of control tasks for efficient network performance. In addition, our distributed control paradigm is practical for real sensor network management. Simulation results indicate the superior performance of our algorithm between energy efficiency and QoS provisioning.
