This paper addresses the scope for more integrated general analysis of diversity in science, technology and society. It proposes a framework recognizing three necessary but individually insufficient properties of diversity. Based on 10 quality criteria, it suggests a general quantitative non-parametric diversity heuristic. This allows the systematic exploration of diversity under different perspectives, including divergent conceptions of relevant attributes and contrasting weightings on different diversity properties. It is shown how this heuristic may be used to explore different possible trade-offs between diversity and other aspects of interest, including portfolio interactions. The resulting approach offers a way to be more systematic and transparent in the treatment of scientific and technological diversity in a range of fields, including conservation management, research governance, energy policy and sustainable innovation.

A General Framework for Analysing Diversity in Science, Technology and Society

Underwater sensor networks (USN) for ocean development and disaster prevention have been emerged as one of interesting research topics recently. Since low-power, high-speed and inexpensive communication modem is a prerequisite for deployment of USN, in this paper we design and implement an underwater modem by utilizing general-purpose waterproof ultrasonic sensors. Also, we make some experiments in a water tank containing two point-to-point modems. According to the experiments, nearly error-free communication is possible at a distance of 1 meter with a data rate of 1 kbps and communication quality is rapidly deteriorated by the increase of data rate.

Design and implementation of high-speed communication modem using ultrasonic sensors for underwater sensor networks

The recently suggested triangular quadrature amplitude modulation (TQAM) provides considerable power gain over square quadrature amplitude modulation (SQAM) at the expense of slight increase in detection complexity. However, power gain of the TQAM is limited on account of the constraint that signal points are regularly distributed at the vertexes of contiguous equilateral triangles. In this paper, we investigate a modified signal constellation of the TQAM where signal points are irregularly distributed while preserving triangular structure, and calculate achievable power gain of the proposed scheme. We also address optimum and suboptimum bit stream mapping methods and suggest a simple and optimum detection method for the constellation to be meaningful in practical implementation. Analysis and simulation show that the proposed constellation provides power gains of 0.62 dB and 0.20 dB over the SQAM and the TQAM at a target symbol error rate of 10-6 for 64-ary case.

An Evolving Mobile E-Health Service Platform

In a turbo decoder for code rate 1/n which consists of a decoding block, that is, n−1 constituent decoders, n−2 interleavers and n−2 deinterleavers, one embodiment of a decoding method according to the present invention comprises: a first decoding process of sequentially decoding starting from a first constituent decoder among the n−1 constituent decoders to generate a first log-likelihood ratio; a second decoding process of sequentially decoding starting from a second constituent decoder to generate a second log-likelihood ratio different from the first log-likelihood ratio, the second decoding process being activated in parallel with the first decoding process; a (n−1)th decoding process of sequentially decoding starting from a (n−1)th constituent decoder to generate a (n−1)th log-likelihood ratio different from the log-likelihood ratios, the (n−1)th decoding process being activated in parallel with other decoding processes; a step of optimally weighting respective components forming each log-likelihood ratio simultaneously generated at each decoding process; and a step of combining the weighted log-likelihood ratios and performing the hard decision using a combiner to obtain diversity gain. Another embodiment of a decoding method comprises the steps of: after adding a decoding block, activating the decoding blocks in parallel; activating the constituent decoders of each decoding block in parallel; optimally weighting components of respective log-likelihood ratios from respective decoding processes and combining the weighted log-likelihood ratios at the combiner. The present invention considerably improves a bit error rate characteristic and reduces the number of iterations required to satisfy a given bit error rate, compared with the conventional decoding method.

Decoding method of turbo codes using a weighted parallel type and device for the same

We consider allocating different powers on systematic bits and parity bits at turbo encoder outputs with total transmission power fixed. We investigate how the transmission power has to be allocated in terms of E/sub b//N/sub 0/ and the number of iterations, and examine the power gain provided by allocating the transmission power properly.
