Clay-containing polymeric nanocomposites and their properties

A stable aqueous nanocomposite dispersion containing cellulose whiskers and a poly(styrene-co-hexyl- acrylate) matrix was prepared via miniemulsion polymer- ization. We were able to prepare a stable dispersion with a 20 wt % solid content and a cellulose whiskers content ranging from 1 up to 5 wt % based on polymer content. To avoid particle agglomeration leading to coagulum for- mation, the addition of a low amount of reactive silane, i.e., methacryloxypropyl triethoxysilane revealed to efficiently stabilize the dispersion. The nanocomposite dis- persion was characterized using dynamic light scattering, transmission electron microscopy, and atomic force microscopy. Films obtained by casting followed by water evaporation and particle coalescence were analyzed by differential scanning calorimetry, dynamic mechanical analysis, and tensile testing. The unique crystallization behavior of poly((butylene succinate)-co-adipate) (PBSA) nanocomposite is addressed. Nanocomposite has been prepared by melt-blending of PBSA and organically modified synthetic fluorine mica (OSFM) in a batch mixer. The structure of the nanocomposite is studied by using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), which reveals a coexistence of exfoliated and intercalated silicate layers homogeneously dispersed in the PBSA matrix. The non-isothermal crystallization behavior of PBSA and nanocomposite samples is studied by differential scanning calorimeter (DSC). Various models, namely the Avrami method, the Ozawa method, and the combined Avrami-Ozawa method have been applied to describe the kinetics of non-isothermal crystallization. All analyses reveal that the incorporation of the OSFM altered the crystallization properties of PBSA but in ways unexpected from other polymer nanocomposite systems. Polarized optical microscopy (POM) is used to support this conclusion. The activation energy for non-isothermal crystallization of both samples is evaluated by using three different methods. The results show that the absolute value of activation energy for nanocomposite is higher than that of neat polymer. This indicates the slower crystallization kinetics of nanocomposite. The effect of incorporation of OSFM on the cold crystallization behavior of neat PBSA is also studied by both conventional and temperature-modulated DSC.
