We redevelop persistent homology (topological persistence) from a categorical point of view. The main objects of study are diagrams, indexed by the poset of real numbers, in some target category. The set of such diagrams has an interleaving distance, which we show generalizes the previously-studied bottleneck distance. To illustrate the utility of this approach, we greatly generalize previous stability results for persistence, extended persistence, and kernel, image and cokernel persistence. We give a natural construction of a category of interleavings of these diagrams, and show that if the target category is abelian, so is this category of interleavings.

Categorification of persistent homology

We generalize the persistence diagram of Cohen-Steiner, Edelsbrunner, and Harer to the setting of constructible persistence modules valued in a symmetric monoidal category. We call this the type $${\mathcal {A}}$$
 persistence diagram of a persistence module. If the category is also abelian, then we define a second type $${\mathcal {B}}$$
 persistence diagram. In addition, we show that both diagrams are stable to all sufficiently small perturbations of the module. The type $${\mathcal {B}}$$
 persistence diagram carries less information than the type $${\mathcal {A}}$$
 persistence diagram, but it enjoys a stronger stability theorem.

Fabricating Architecture : from modern to global space

Koenig and Xi introduced {\em affine cellular algebras}. Kleshchev and Loubert showed that an important class of {\em infinite dimensional} algebras, the KLR algebras $R(\Gamma)$ of finite Lie type $\Gamma$, are (graded) affine cellular; in fact, the corresponding affine cell ideals are idempotent. This additional property is reminiscent of the properties of {\em quasihereditary algebras} of Cline-Parshall-Scott in a {\em finite dimensional} situation. A fundamental result of Cline-Parshall-Scott says that a finite dimensional algebra $A$ is quasihereditary if and only if the category of finite dimensional $A$-modules is a {\em highest weight category}. On the other hand, S. Kato and Brundan-Kleshchev-McNamara proved that the category of {\em finitely generated graded} $R(\Gamma)$-modules has many features reminiscent of those of a highest weight category. The goal of this paper is to axiomatize and study the notions of an {\em affine quasihereditary algebra} and an {\em affine highest weight category}. In particular, we prove an affine analogue of the Cline-Parshall-Scott Theorem. We also develop {\em stratified} versions of these notions.

Affine highest weight categories and affine quasihereditary algebras

Fundamentality plays a pivotal role in discussions of ontology, supervenience, and possibility, and other key topics in metaphysics. However, there are two different ways of characterising the fundamental: as that which is not grounded, and as that which is the ground of everything else. I show that whether these two characterisations pick out the same property turns on a principle—which I call “Dichotomy”—that is of independent interest in the theory of ground: that everything is either fully grounded or not even partially grounded. I then argue that Dichotomy fails: some facts have partial grounds that cannot be complemented to a full ground. Rejecting Dichotomy opens the door to recognising a bifurcation in our notion of fundamentality. I sketch some of the far-reaching metaphysical consequences this might have, with reference to big-picture views such as Humeanism. Since Dichotomy is entailed by the standard account of partial ground, according to which partial grounds are subpluralities of full grounds, a non-standard account is needed. In a technical “Appendix”, I show that truthmaker semantics furnishes such an account, and identify a semantic condition that corresponds to Dichotomy.
