In recent years, an exponential increase has been witnessed in the population of the urban area worldwide, causing a significant increase in the use of transportation services. The traditional transportation system in metropolitan cities is overwhelmed, leading to many challenges. The Internet-of-Things- (IoT-) based technology has the potential to optimize transportation services in several ways. This paper highlights the challenges and consequences of an existing transportation system in Peshawar, Pakistan, in response to the rapid growth in population. Apart from the common issues, some areas in Peshawar are highly vulnerable to massive traffic jams. For this purpose, we have proposed an IoT-based framework for busy traffic junctions. The proposed framework considers the route selection problem as a game of two players, where Nash Equilibrium (NE) sets traffic for each route so that no individual can improve its performance by changing its strategy. NE calculates the traffic density from a roadside unit (RSU) collected data, which later detects and avoids traffic congestion by an alternate route selection. The framework in this paper provides a platform for the academia and transport department to convert the existing transportation system to IoT-based intelligent transportation in Peshawar, Pakistan.

Smart Transportation in Developing Countries: An Internet-of-Things-Based Conceptual Framework for Traffic Control

Collaborative multi-agents in dynamic industrial internet of things using deep reinforcement learning

Given the predicted rises in power demands in the coming years, serious adjustments will have to be made within India's energy-sector. Additionally, because of the recently attained widespread availability of the internet services across the country, viable integrated application of the technology is finally possible. It is known that one of the ways to reduce energy costs in the long-term is to switch to renewable sources of energy. The proposed research work thus focuses on the application of renewable energy sources, particularly making use of the wind, solar and piezoelectric sources for generating electricity, combined with the implementation of an IoT -based public-safety alarm system. Solar panels, wind turbines and piezoelectric sensors were installed to make a model for highway applications, which is followed by the installation of a smart alarm facility that uses internet services to send signals to connected devices. In keeping with the objective, evaluation of the energy spent in the case of the newly installed renewable sources indicated a significant decrease in the consumption of energy and power, as compared to previously established systems. The testing and use of an Internet of things (IoT) based alarm facility demonstrated that safety authorities can now be notified much more quickly and directly, with the push of a button. Thus, implementing renewable energy sources in conjunction with services based on the concept of IoT and cloud-based services would result in more efficient use of energy and time. 

Smart Highway Powered by Green Energy Using IoT and Cloud Computing

It is no secret that street lighting costs a city a lot of money in terms of energy. An intelligent street lighting system can reduce municipal street lighting expenses by 50 percent to 70 percent. As the name implies, intelligent street lighting systems automatically modify their light output based on usage and occupancy, such as pedestrians, cyclists, cars and trucks being the primary users of the road. In order to reduce energy consumption, an intelligent street light management recommends installing a wireless-based system that can remotely track and control the real energy usage of the street lights. Using an IR transmitter and IR receiver combination, we present a technique for energy conservation. When the sensor detects movement, it sends the data to the microcontroller, which then turns the Light ON/OFF as needed. To reduce energy wasting and to save lives from accidents, this research’s major goal is to prevent energy wastage. 

Accelerating the Deployment of observant Energy Efficient Lighting System for Smart Cities

This study introduces an adaptive street light system based on sensor units that makes the system cost efficient and reduces the power consumption across highways on the basis of traffic conditions and intensity. The main goal of the system is to develop a power saving and efficient street light system and take a initiative towards generating street light poles smart and intelligent using IoT. Enormous use of street lights is consuming large amount of electricity due to their uninterrupted operation all over the night to manage traffic on daily basis. To minimize the large consumption of electricity across highways there must be a technological system that works smart and modify the street light poles based on traffic conditions. This paper is concerned with evolution and implementation of IoT based smart street lights.
