For the Australian geographer, Kay Anderson, Vancouver's Chinatom provides a laboratory in which she 'attempts to demonstrate mpirically the workings of the racialization processes' (3) in order 'to expose the susceptibility of racial beliefs to change and challenge and the potential there for their ultimate annulment' (7). As she frankly admits, she is using 'historical material with a view to presenting a sociological rgument' (4). She contends that the idea of racial type was a social constraint rather than a biological fact (44) but, while criticizing Marxist explanations and the psychological interpretation espoused by Peter Ward, she sensibly concludes that 'the complex relationship that exists in capitalist societies between racial consciousness and economic forces needs to be further unpacked' (247). One of her major themes is that ' \"Chinatown\" is not \"Chinatown\" only because the Chinese whether by choice or constraint have lived in enclaves. Rather \"Chinatown\" is in part a European creation' (9). Indeed, she describes the perception of Chinese as a 'different' group as a 'cultural abstraction' (8). and Benderly’s thesis that “[Jewish] women [ i n the United States] have had a distinctive history apart from that of Jewish men” (xv), the chapters that follow do not support that assertion in the way that Diner and Benderly appear to have intended. Instead, the text relies on the male-oriented approach to the study of American Jewish life employed by an older generation of scholarship, which Diner and Benderly leaven by liberally tossing in stories of Jewish women. In short, the book omits the kind of clelailed discussion of gender in American Jewish life that so enlivens Karla Goldman’s Hoyortd the Synagogue Gallery (2000) and Riv-Ellen Prell’s Fighting to Become AmeriUJIW (199Y)-both of which are curiously omitted from the bibliography here-as well as the magisterial analysis of intersections between Judaism, feminism, and American lile presented by Joyce Antler in The Journey Home (1997). Dincr and Benderly thus keep Jewish women on the sidelines rather than placing them at the center of American Jewish life. Moreover, they are careless with their sources, taking quotes out of context in ways that distort meaning-a problem they could have avoided by consulting the primary documents rather than relying on another scholar’s interpretation of them. Taken together, these problems unravel the potential of this work to contribute to our understanding of Jewish women in America. Her Works Pruise Her proves a dissatisfying book that only mimics thc kind of scholarship that the publisher evidently wants it to be.
