Characteristics of field-aligned currents have been determined during a large number of substorms from the magnetic field observations acquired with the Triad satellite. The statistical features of field-aligned currents include the following: (1) The large-scale regions of field-aligned currents determined previously by the authors (Iijima and Potemra, 1976a) persist during all phases of substorm activity, namely, region 1, located near the poleward boundary of the field-aligned current region, and region 2, located near the equatorward boundary. Field-aligned currents flow into region 1 on the morningside and away from region 1 on the eveningside. The current flow in region 2 is reversed to region 1 at any given local time except in the Harang discontinuity region (∼2000–2400 MLT), where the flow patterns are more complicated. (2) During active periods (|AL| ≥ 100 γ) the average latitude width of regions 1 and 2 increases by 20–30%, and the centers of these regions shift equatorward by 2°–3° with respect to the quiet time values. (3) The current density in region 1 is statistically larger than the current density in region 2 at all local times except during active periods and in the midnight to morning local time sector. In this region, where the westward electrojet is most active, the current density in region 2 can exceed the current density in region 1. (4) During relatively quiet conditions (|AL| < 100 γ) the largest field-aligned current densities occur in two areas of region 1 near noon (near ∼ 1030 MLT and ∼ 1300 MLT) with an average value of ∼1.6µA/m². During active periods (|AL| ≥ 100 γ) the regions of peak current density shift toward the nightside (the region near 1030 MLT shifts to ∼0730 MLT, and the region near ∼1300 MLT shifts to ∼1430 MLT), and the average current density increases to ∼2.2 µA/m². (5) The average total amount of field-aligned current flowing into the ionosphere always equals the current flow away from the ionosphere during a wide range of quiet and disturbed conditions. The average total current during quiet periods is ∼2.7 × 106 A and during disturbed periods is ∼5.2 × 106 A. (6) A three-region pattern of field-aligned current flow persists in the Harang discontinuity region (∼2000–2400 MLT) during undisturbed and disturbed periods, when the westward auroral electrojet does not intrude into this sector. This flow pattern consists of an upward flowing field-aligned current surrounded to the north and south by downward flowing currents. During periods when the westward auroral electrojet has intruded deeply into the evening sector the Triad magnetometer data exhibit complicated and fine-structured variations indicating the presence of complex field-aligned currents in this sector. (7) The alignment of current sheets is generally along the boundary of the auroral oval (rather than in the east-west direction), but noticeable distortions of this alignment occur during very disturbed periods. The alignment of field-aligned currents is different in region 1 and region 2 during active periods. The different behavior of field-aligned currents in region 1 and 2 during substorms actively suggests that they are controlled by different source regions in the magnetosphere or ionosphere. The region 1 field-aligned currents map to the outermost part of the magnetosphere and magnetotail region, whereas the region 2 currents map to regions of the plasma sheet closer to the earth.

Large‐scale characteristics of field‐aligned currents associated with substorms

Geometrical considerations are presented to show that dayside magnetic merging when constrained to act only where the fields are antiparallel results in lines of merging that converge at the polar cusps. An important consequence of this geometry is that no accelerated flows are predicted across the dayside magnetopause. Acceleration owing to merging acts in opposition to the magnetosheath flow at the merging point and produces the variably directed, slower-than-magnetosheath flows observed in the entry layer. Another consequence of the merging geometry is that much of the time closed field lines constitute the subsolar region of the magnetopause. The manner in which the polar cap convection patterns predicted by the proposed geometry change as the interplanetary field is rotated through 360 deg provides a unifying description of how the observed single circular vortex and the crescent-shaped double vortex patterns mutually evolve under the influence of a single operating principle.

Dayside merging and cusp geometry

[1] A new empirical magnetic field model has been developed, representing the variable configuration of the inner and near magnetosphere for different interplanetary conditions and the ground disturbance levels. This paper describes the mathematical structure of the model, while the results of fitting it to a new set of spacecraft data are presented in a companion paper. The general approach remains the same as in the earlier T96 model, but the mathematical description of all major sources of the magnetospheric field now applies recently developed new methods. In particular, the field deformation technique is extensively used, making it possible to realistically and flexibly represent the fields of the cross-tail current, the ring current, and the Region 1 and 2 Birkeland currents. The new model ring current includes not only the axisymmetric component but also a partial ring current with field-aligned closure currents, a feature absent in earlier data-based models. The field of the cross-tail current includes two modules whose current densities vary along the Sun-Earth line with different rates. The cross-tail current sheet warps in two dimensions in response to the geodipole tilt, its inner edge shifts along the Sun-Earth line with growing disturbance, and its thickness varies along and across the tail. Birkeland currents of Regions 1 and 2 vary in response to interplanetary conditions, so that at ionospheric altitudes they shift in latitude and change their distribution in local time. The magnetospheric boundary is specified using a most recent empirical model [Shue et al., 1998]; its size is controlled by the solar wind ram pressure, and its shape also varies in response to changes of the Earth's dipole tilt angle. The model magnetopause ensures a full confinement of the fields of all sources inside the magnetopause, regardless of its shape and size. The model also includes an interplanetary magnetic field–controlled interconnection field, allowing a finite normal Bn at the magnetopause and hence open magnetospheric configurations.

A model of the near magnetosphere with a dawn-dusk asymmetry 1. Mathematical structure

Observations with the Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory (LASL) plasma probe and the Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) magnetometer on the IMP 6 satellite show that the magnetospheric boundary layer, first identified along the flanks of the magnetosphere, is also present at the magnetosphere's sunward surface. The magnetic field lines in this sunward sector of the boundary layer are closed, and the plasma flow has a component transverse to the field. These observations suggest that the boundary layer is a site of continual transfer of plasma, momentum and energy from the magnetosheath to the magnetosphere. These transfer processes supply plasma and magnetic field to the magnetotail. Also, they produce, indirectly, the dawn-to-dusk electric field across the polar cap, the field-aligned currents that border the dayside polar cap, and the soft particle fluxes that characterize the cleft precipitation, including recently reported dawn-dusk asymmetries of these fluxes. Magnetosheath plasma directly enters the outer few hundred to few thousand kilometers of the magnetosphere's surface to form the boundary layer. There it is enabled to flow across the magnetic field (and approximately parallel to the magnetosphere's surface) by becoming electrically polarized. Leakage of the polarization charge along magnetic field lines to the earth produces themore » dayside high latitude effects mentioned above. The polarizing current flowing across the boundary layer interacts with the magnetic field to oppose the boundary layer plasma flow, taking up its momentum. In this way the magnetic field lines are pulled downstream. The process described here is independent of the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) and thus may constitute the principal transfer mechanism during prolonged periods of northward IMF when the magnetosphere is very quiet. The magnetospheric boundary layer: Site of plasma, momentum and energy transfer from the magnetosheath into the magnetosphere

It is shown that discontinuities in the magnetospheric convection electric field E with ▽ · E <0 can generate large-scale regions (of the order of 100 km in width) of magnetic field-aligned currents with associated field-aligned electric potential differences and electron precipitation of the magnitudes and widths observed in auroral regions. Such an electric field discontinuity is known to exist along the evening boundary between sunward and antisunward convection. In addition, such discontinuities may also exist over the polar cap, on account of inhomogeneities in the magnetosheath flow and in regions, such as the Alfven layer, where drifting trapped particles charge separate. The present analysis assumes that the field-aligned current is governed by the free particle motion in dc electric and magnetic fields, and nothing is assumed to inhibit this free particle motion.

Generation of large-scale regions of auroral currents, electric potentials, and precipitation by the divergence of the convection electric field

The characteristics of field-aligned currents at an altitude of 800 km in the dayside high-latitude region over the northern hemisphere were determined from the Triad satellite magnetometer data recorded at College, Alaska, from January 1973 to October 1974. The field-aligned currents discussed here are located poleward of the large-scale field-aligned currents reported earlier and referred to as 'region 1 field-aligned currents' by the authors (Iijima and Potemra, 1976). These high-latitude field-aligned currents are most often observed in the dayside sector between 0930 and 1430 MLT and are statistically distributed between 78/sup 0/ and 80/sup 0/ invariant latitude during weakly disturbed conditions as indicated by westward electrojet activity (abs. value of AL < 100..gamma..). Although these high-latitude field-aligned currents show complicated variations, they generally flow away from the ionosphere in the forenoon hours (0930--1200 MLT) and into the ionosphere in the afternoon hours (1200--1430 MLT). These flow directions are opposite to the quasi-permanent region 1 field-aligned currents related to the S/sub q//sup p/ currents previously discussed by the authors. The directions and spatial distribution of these field-aligned currents are consistent with the antisolarward equivalent ionospheric current near 1200 MLT deduced from simultaneous ground-based magnetograms at approx.81/sup 0/ invariant latitude. The intensitymore » of these high-latitude field-aligned currents increases as the interplanetary magnetic field increases in the southward direction. These field-aligned currents are located within the region associated with the dayside magnetospheric cusp, and their relationship to geomagnetic activity, especially interplanetary magnetic field variations, suggests that they may play an important role in the coupling between the interplanetary medium and the magnetosphere.
