Critical Discourse Analysis

This paper discusses some principles of critical discourse analy- sis, such as the explicit sociopolitical stance of discourse analysts, and a focus on dominance relations by elite groups and institutions as they are being enacted, legitimated or otherwise reproduced by text and talk. One of the crucial elements of this analysis of the relations between power and discourse is the patterns of access to (public) discourse for different social groups. Theoretically it is shown that in order to be able to relate power and discourse in an explicit way, we need the cognitive interface of models. knowledge, attitudes and ideologies and other social represen- tations of the social mind, which also relate the individual and the social, and the micro- and the macro-levels of social structure. Finally, the argu- ment is illustrated with an analysis of parliamentary debates about ethnic affairs.

Principles of Critical Discourse Analysis

▪ Abstract This paper provides a survey of critical discourse analysis (CDA), a recent school of discourse analysis that concerns itself with relations of power and inequality in language. CDA explicitly intends to incorporate social-theoretical insights into discourse analysis and advocates social commitment and interventionism in research. The main programmatic features and domains of enquiry of CDA are discussed, with emphasis on attempts toward theory formation by one of CDA's most prominent scholars, Norman Fairclough. Another section reviews the genesis and disciplinary growth of CDA, mentions some of the recent critical reactions to it, and situates it within the wider picture of a new critical paradigm developing in a number of language-oriented (sub) disciplines. In this critical paradigm, topics such as ideology, inequality, and power figure prominently, and many scholars productively attempt to incorporate social-theoretical insights into the study of language.

What is political discourse analysis

One of the crucial tasks of Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) is to account
for the relationships between discourse and social power. More
specifically, such an analysis should describe and explain how power abuse
is enacted, reproduced or legitimised by the text and talk of dominant
groups or institutions. Within the framework of such an account of
discursively mediated dominance and inequality this chapter focuses on an
important dimension of such dominance, that is, patterns of access to
discourse.

Opinions and ideologies in the press

This chapter focuses on the ‘expression’ of ideologies in various structures of
text and talk. It is situated within the broader framework of a research project
on discourse and ideology which has been conducted at the University of
Amsterdam since 1993. The theoretical premise of this study is that
ideologies are typically, though not exclusively, expressed and reproduced in
discourse and communication, including non-verbal semiotic messages, such
as pictures, photographs and movies. Obviously, ideologies are also
‘enacted’ in other forms of action and interaction, and their reproduction is
often embedded in organizational and institutional contexts. Thus, racist
ideologies may be expressed and reproduced in racist talk, comics or movies
in the context of the mass media, but they may also be enacted in many
forms of discrimination and institutionalized by racist parties within the
context of the mass media or of Western parliamentary democracies.
However, among the many forms of reproduction and interaction, discourse
plays a prominent role as the preferential site for the explicit, verbal
formulation and the persuasive communication of ideological propositions.
