Alternative synthetic methods through new developments in catalysis by gold.

It is well known that urbanization and industrialization have resulted in the rapidly increasing emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which are a major contributor to the formation of secondary pollutants (e.g., tropospheric ozone, PAN (peroxyacetyl nitrate), and secondary organic aerosols) and photochemical smog. The emission of these pollutants has led to a large decline in air quality in numerous regions around the world, which has ultimately led to concerns regarding their impact on human health and general well-being. Catalytic oxidation is regarded as one of the most promising strategies for VOC removal from industrial waste streams. This Review systematically documents the progresses and developments made in the understanding and design of heterogeneous catalysts for VOC oxidation over the past two decades. It addresses in detail how catalytic performance is often drastically affected by the pollutant sources and reaction conditions. It also highlights the primary routes for catalyst deactivation and discusses protocols for their subsequent reactivation. Kinetic models and proposed oxidation mechanisms for representative VOCs are also provided. Typical catalytic reactors and oxidizers for industrial VOC destruction are further discussed. We believe that this Review will provide a great foundation and reference point for future design and development in this field.

Recent Advances in the Catalytic Oxidation of Volatile Organic Compounds: A Review Based on Pollutant Sorts and Sources.

Greener approaches to organic synthesis using microreactor technology.

In this perspective, we highlight the main opportunities of metal organic frameworks (MOFs) as heterogeneous catalysts. Along with our personal view on the most promising catalytic applications, the most important issues that still need to be addressed before commercial implementation of MOF catalysis are discussed.

Metal Organic Framework Catalysis: Quo vadis?

Monolithic catalysts can be attractive replacements for conventional catalysts in randomly packed beds or slurry reactors. The conventional procedures for preparing catalysts, however, cannot simply be applied to monolithic catalysts. Different procedures are discussed on how to put a coat layer of a catalyst support material like alumina, silica, or carbon on a monolith body by either filling the pores in that support or by putting a layer on that support. Different methods to apply an active phase to the support are discussed as well. Finally, methods to convert ready-made catalysts into monolithic catalysts are presented.

Preparation of monolithic catalysts

Propene oxide, which is one of the major commodity chemicals used in chemical industry, desperately requires a new process for its production, because of the disadvantages that are encountered with the currently available processes. This paper discusses the existing processes used for the production of propene oxidethe chlorohydrin and hydroperoxide processesand their advantages and disadvantages. Furthermore, the new processes and catalysts under development for the propene oxide production are discussed, as well as the challenges that are still limiting the applications of some of those prospects. The most important new developments for the production of propene oxide discussed in this paper are:  the hydrogen peroxide combination process, the ethene oxide alike silver catalysts, the molten salt systems, and the gold−titania catalyst systems.
