A method has been invented for monitoring an object passing through a frame space of a light panel, the light panel having at least one light emitter on the first side, the at least one light emitter for continuously emitting a fan-shaped light beam, across the frame through which and beyond which an object may pass, and at least one light detector on the second side of the frame and associated electronic sensing apparatus connected to the at least one light detector for continuously detecting the fan-shaped light beam from the at least one light emitter, the method including detecting with the at least one light detector and associated electronic sensing apparatus interruption by an object of the fan-shaped light beam continuously emitted by the at least one light emitter; and generating with the electronic sensing apparatus a signal signalling the interruption of the fan-shaped beam by the object. A light panel system has been invented for monitoring and determining information concerning moving or stationary objects. In one aspect the light beam is modulated. In one aspect such a panel has on-board electronics for calculating: object (e.g., but not limited to, bullet) location, size, shape, orientation and/or velocity. Methods are described for using such systems and such light panels.

Moving object monitoring system

An optical digitizer is constructed for determining a position of a pointing object projecting a light and being disposed on a coordinate plane. In the optical digitizer, a detector is disposed on a periphery of the coordinate plane and has a view field covering the coordinate plane for receiving the light projected from the pointing object and for converting the received light into an electric signal. A processor is provided for processing the electric signal fed from the detector to compute coordinates representing the position of the pointing object. A collimator is disposed to limit the view field of the detector below a predetermined height relative to the coordinate plane such that through the limited view field the detector can receive only a parallel component of the light which is projected from the pointing object substantially in parallel to the coordinate plane. A shield is disposed to enclose the periphery of the coordinate plane to block a noise light other than the projected light from entering into the limited view field of the detector.

Optical digitizer and display means for providing display of indicated position

Apparatus for detecting the position of a passive object includes a generally rectangular frame having an open interior, a source on the frame for emitting light through the frame interior from three sides thereof, a pair of linear image detectors, such as charge-coupled devices, being respectively mounted on the frame at two corners thereof being located at opposite ends of a fourth side thereof and adjacent respective opposite ends of the light source, a pair of aperture-defining devices located at the two frame corners between the detectors and the interior of the frame for configuring coincident fields of light from the frame interior for the detectors to view, and control circuitry connected to the detectors. Each of the detectors is capable of receiving its respective field of light from the frame interior and sensing interruption of light at any location within the field. The control circuitry is responsive to any interruption sensed by the detectors for determining where in the frame interior illuminated by the coincident fields of light the interruption occurred and thereby the position of the passive object which caused the interruption.

Position detection apparatus

A weapons training range provides a simulated weapons use scenario including return fire. A microprocessor selects branches from a multi-branch program and causes an image projector to project subscenarios on a display screen visible to a participant. In response to the subscenarios, the participant fires at projected threats. Return fire simulators positioned behind the display screen return fire toward the participant. Obstructions are placed in the weapons range to provide cover for the participant. A video camera and X-Y position sensor identify the X-Y location of the participant and try to detect exposed portions of the participant. Based upon the identified X-Y location and any detected exposed portions, the microprocessor aims the return fire simulators to provide simulated return fire. To simulate real world aiming, the microprocessor induces time-based and response-based aiming errors. Additionally, the microprocessor may aim the return fire simulators at objects in the participation zone to produce deflected fire that may also strike the participant.

Electronically controlled weapons range with return fire

A photoelectric touch input panel has a plurality of crossed light beams which are broken by an object, the position coordinates of which are identified as outputs. Two spaced apart beam surfaces are provided, and the interrelationship between the beams in the two planes is employed to distinguish between interrupting objects on the basis of their size, attitude, and velocity characteristics. The number of beams broken in any beam plane is counted to determine the relative size of the object, or to determine the center line of the interrupting object. The beams in any beam plane are selected in accordance with the relative significance of the various beams, and interrupted beams are pulsed more rapidly than non-interrupted beams. The light-emitting devices of the various beam planes are constructed as an integral unit. The control system of the touch input panel is adapted for use in monitoring the size, shape, and activity of objects within a space defined by plural beam planes, independently of the touch input panel.

Photoelectric input apparatus

A target system for measuring the location and diameter of a projectile in a frame of reference, including vertical and horizontal banks of light sources for projecting collimated beams of light across the target area, and corresponding vertical and horizontal banks of light receptors for indicating the location and diameter of a projectile passing through the target frame. A plurality of light receptors receive impinging light from each light source, each light receptor receiving a predetermined portion of a corresponding collimated light beam. When a light beam is interrupted by a projectile, the light receptors indicate the location and diameter of a projectile in increments less than the width of the collimated beam. Output signals from the light receptors are converted to numerically coded signals by coupling the output signals from the light receptors to a plurality of amplifiers, less in number than the number of light receptors, according to a predetermined coding pattern.
