This paper proposes a secure encrypted-data aggregation scheme for wireless sensor networks. Our design for data aggregation eliminates redundant sensor readings without using encryption and maintains data secrecy and privacy during transmission. Conventional aggregation functions operate when readings are received in plaintext. If readings are encrypted, aggregation requires decryption creating extra overhead and key management issues. In contrast to conventional schemes, our proposed scheme provides security and privacy, and duplicate instances of original readings will be aggregated into a single packet. Our scheme is resilient to known-plaintext attacks, chosen-plaintext attacks, ciphertext-only attacks and man-in-the-middle attacks. Our experiments show that our proposed aggregation method significantly reduces communication overhead and can be practically implemented in on-the-shelf sensor platforms.

Efficient data aggregation with in-network integrity control for WSN

Energy is a scarce resource in Wireless Sensor Networks. Some studies show that more than 70% of energy is consumed in data transmission. Since most of the time, the sensed information is redundant due to geographically collocated sensors, most of this energy can be saved through data aggregation. Furthermore, data aggregation improves bandwidth usage. Unfortunately, while aggregation eliminates redundancy, it makes data integrity verification more complicated since the received data is unique. In this paper, we present a new protocol that provides secure aggregation for wireless sensor networks. Our protocol is based on a two hops verification mechanism of data integrity. Our solution is essentially different from existing solutions in that it does not require referring to the base station for verifying and detecting faulty aggregated readings, thus providing a totally distributed scheme to guarantee data integrity. We carried out simulations using TinyOS environment. Simulation results show that the proposed protocol yields significant savings in energy consumption while preserving data integrity.

SEDAN: Secure and Efficient protocol for Data Aggregation in wireless sensor Networks

This paper studies the problem of how to maximize the network lifetime while preserving network coverage for an energy constrained wireless sensor network. We consider network coverage from an our recently proposed information coverage model [1] other than the conventional sensing disk model. The lifetime maximization problem is modeled as a nonlinear programming problem and is shown NP-Complete. We then propose a family of greedy algorithms to allocate sensors different roles such that different sensors may consume different amount of energies in different intervals to prolong network lifetime while still guaranteeing application requirements. Simulation results suggest that the algorithm with the best balancing between communication energy consumption and area coverage requirement has the highest network lifetime.

Information Coverage and Network Lifetime in Energy Constrained Wireless Sensor Networks

Bluetooth is a low-cost, low-power and short range communication technology, which operates in 2.4 GHz ISM band. The important research issues in Bluetooth are scatternet formation and routing, since nodes can arrive and depart at arbitrary time. In this paper, novel route maintenance algorithms are proposed for the Bluetooth scatternet that supports mobility of the nodes. Our protocols guarantee the connectivity among nodes and reconstruct the routes dynamically by taking their location information. Besides, we propose how to reduce the number of hops and to form the shortest route between the source and the destination due to addition of nodes. Performance analysis of our work shows that it outperforms in terms of end to end transmission delay, bandwidth consumption and route maintenance as compared to similar Bluetooth routing protocols.

Location Aware Route Maintenance Protocols for the Mobile Bluetooth Radio Networks

A scheme is proposed for secure data aggregation in wireless sensor networks. Commitment schemes and a class of functions called quasi commutative functions are used to achieve provably secure data aggregation. Efficient schemes to verify the data aggregation are provided.
