TL;DR: This paper presents a meta-analyses of the results of a large-scale study of how language, memory, and attention are affected by encoding in the form of letters, symbols, and sentences in the context of a story.
Journal ArticleDOI

Effects of inescapable shock on subsequent avoidance performance: Role of response repertoire changes

TL;DR: The fecundity of divorcing fear conditioning from instrumental components of avoidance training as a psychopharmacological technique is discussed, and the role of numerous variables which modulate the effects of aversive stimulation is examined.
Journal ArticleDOI

Effects of inescapable shock and shock-produced conflict on self selection of alcohol in rats.

TL;DR: It was found that stress of inescapable unavoidable shock produced increased self selection of alcohol, and factors such as predictability of shock, shock schedule and nutritional deficiency were found not to alter alcohol consumption substanially.
Journal ArticleDOI

Footshock-produced excitation and inhibition of activity in rats

TL;DR: Activity measures recorded following footshock indicated that the rate of decline in activity following FS increases with successive shock presentations, supporting the hypothesis that the “incubation effect” is a result of a decline of the activating effects of FS.
