We present a universal statistical model for texture images in the context of an overcomplete complex wavelet transform. The model is parameterized by a set of statistics computed on pairs of coefficients corresponding to basis functions at adjacent spatial locations, orientations, and scales. We develop an efficient algorithm for synthesizing random images subject to these constraints, by iteratively projecting onto the set of images satisfying each constraint, and we use this to test the perceptual validity of the model. In particular, we demonstrate the necessity of subgroups of the parameter set by showing examples of texture synthesis that fail when those parameters are removed from the set. We also demonstrate the power of our model by successfully synthesizing examples drawn from a diverse collection of artificial and natural textures.

A Parametric Texture Model Based on Joint Statistics of Complex Wavelet Coefficients

We propose a new approach for image segmentation that is based on low-level features for color and texture. It is aimed at segmentation of natural scenes, in which the color and texture of each segment does not typically exhibit uniform statistical characteristics. The proposed approach combines knowledge of human perception with an understanding of signal characteristics in order to segment natural scenes into perceptually/semantically uniform regions. The proposed approach is based on two types of spatially adaptive low-level features. The first describes the local color composition in terms of spatially adaptive dominant colors, and the second describes the spatial characteristics of the grayscale component of the texture. Together, they provide a simple and effective characterization of texture that the proposed algorithm uses to obtain robust and, at the same time, accurate and precise segmentations. The resulting segmentations convey semantic information that can be used for content-based retrieval. The performance of the proposed algorithms is demonstrated in the domain of photographic images, including low-resolution, degraded, and compressed images.

Adaptive perceptual color-texture image segmentation

We develop new metrics for texture similarity that accounts for human visual perception and the stochastic nature of textures. The metrics rely entirely on local image statistics and allow substantial point-by-point deviations between textures that according to human judgment are essentially identical. The proposed metrics extend the ideas of structural similarity and are guided by research in texture analysis-synthesis. They are implemented using a steerable filter decomposition and incorporate a concise set of subband statistics, computed globally or in sliding windows. We conduct systematic tests to investigate metric performance in the context of “known-item search,” the retrieval of textures that are “identical” to the query texture. This eliminates the need for cumbersome subjective tests, thus enabling comparisons with human performance on a large database. Our experimental results indicate that the proposed metrics outperform peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR), structural similarity metric (SSIM) and its variations, as well as state-of-the-art texture classification metrics, using standard statistical measures.

Structural Texture Similarity Metrics for Image Analysis and Retrieval

Determination of meat quality by texture analysis

Some computer applications for tissue characterization in medicine and biology, such as analysis of the myocardium or cancer recognition, operate with tissue samples taken from very small areas of interest. In order to perform texture characterization in such an application, only a few texture operators can be employed: the operators should be insensitive to noise and image distortion and yet be reliable in order to estimate texture quality from the small number of image points available. In order to describe the quality of infarcted myocardial tissue, the authors propose a new wavelet-based approach for analysis and classification of texture samples with small dimensions. The main idea of this method is to decompose the given image with a filter bank derived from an orthonormal wavelet basis and to form an image approximation with higher resolution. Texture energy measures calculated at each output of the filter bank as well as energies of synthesized images are used as texture features in a classification procedure. The authors propose an unsupervised classification technique based on a modified statistical t-test. The method is tested with clinical data, and the classification results obtained are very promising. The performance of the new method is compared with the performance of several other transform-based methods. The new algorithm has advantages in classification of small and noisy input samples, and it represents a step toward structural analysis of weak textures.
