‘Capillary forces’ are interactions between particles mediated by fluid interfaces. Recent advances in this field have been achieved by experiments and theory on lateral capillary forces, which are due to the overlap of menisci formed around separate particles attached to an interface. In particular, we should mention the cases of ‘finite menisci’ and ‘capillary multipoles’. The capillary-bridge forces were investigated in relation to capillary condensation and cavitation, surface-force measurements and antifoaming by oily drops. The studies on colloidal self-assembly mediated by capillary forces developed in several promising directions. The obtained structures of particles have found numerous applications.

Capillary forces and structuring in layers of colloid particles

The shape of deposits obtained from drying drops containing colloidal particles matters for technologies such as inkjet printing, microelectronics, and bioassay manufacturing. In this work, the formation of deposits during the drying of nanoliter drops containing colloidal particles is investigated experimentally with microscopy and profilometry, and theoretically with an in-house finite-element code. The system studied involves aqueous drops containing titania nanoparticles evaporating on a glass substrate. Deposit shapes from spotted drops at different pH values are measured using a laser profilometer. Our results show that the pH of the solution influences the dried deposit pattern, which can be ring-like or more uniform. The transition between these patterns is explained by considering how DLVO interactions such as the electrostatic and van der Waals forces modify the particle deposition process. Evaporation of a Droplet: From physics to applications

Laser ablation–inductively coupled plasma–mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) is a widely accepted method for direct sampling of solid materials for trace elemental analysis. The number of reported applications is high and the application range is broad; besides geochemistry, LA-ICP-MS is mostly used in environmental chemistry and the life sciences. This review focuses on the application of LA-ICP-MS for quantification of trace elements in environmental, biological, and medical samples. The fundamental problems of LA-ICP-MS, such as sample-dependent ablation behavior and elemental fractionation, can be even more pronounced in environmental and life science applications as a result of the large variety of sample types and conditions. Besides variations in composition, the range of available sample states is highly diverse, including powders (e.g., soil samples, fly ash), hard tissues (e.g., bones, teeth), soft tissues (e.g., plants, tissue thin-cuts), or liquid samples (e.g., whole blood). Within this article, quantification approaches that have been proposed in the past are critically discussed and compared regarding the results obtained in the applications described. Although a large variety of sample types is discussed within this article, the quantification approaches used are similar for many analytical questions and have only been adapted to the specific questions. Nevertheless, none of them has proven to be a universally applicable method.

Recent advances in quantitative LA-ICP-MS analysis: challenges and solutions in the life sciences and environmental chemistry

Patterns from drying drops.

Stain patterns formed by drying up of droplets of polymer latex dispersion on hydrophilic and hydrophobic surfaces were examined in light of the mechanism of particle adsorption in evaporating droplets. On hydrophilic surfaces, the volume of droplets decreased with time, keeping the initial outline of contact area, and circular stain patterns were formed after the dry-up of droplets. By the microscopic observation of particles in the droplets, it was found that a large portion of the particles were forced to adsorb on the outline of the contact area where a microscopic thin water layer was formed because of hydrophilicity of the surface. On hydrophobic surfaces, on the other hand, the contact area of droplets decreased as evaporation proceeded, while no particle was adsorbed on the surface at the early stages. The particles in the droplets started to aggregate when the concentration of particles reached a critical value, and the aggregates adsorbed on the surface forming tiny spots after the dry-up. Time evolutions of contact angle, contact area and volume of the droplets were analyzed in light of differences in the adsorption mechanisms between hydrophilic and hydrophobic surfaces.
