Field-oriented control and direct torque control are becoming the industrial standards for induction motors torque control. This paper is aimed at giving a contribution for a detailed comparison between the two control techniques, emphasizing advantages and disadvantages. The performance of the two control schemes is evaluated in terms of torque and current ripple, and transient response to step variations of the torque command. The analysis has been carried out on the basis of the results obtained by numerical simulations, where secondary effects introduced by hardware implementation are not present.

FOC and DTC: two viable schemes for induction motors torque control

A method for estimating the rotor flux and speed of an induction motor based on adaptive control theory is presented. The method is applied to a direct field-oriented induction motor control without speed sensors. Controlled induction motor drives without mechanical speed sensors at the motor shaft have the attractions of low cost and high reliability. To replace the sensor the information on the rotor speed is extracted from measured stator voltages and currents at the motor terminals. Vector-controlled drives require estimating the magnitude and spatial orientation of the fundamental magnetic flux waves in the stator or in the rotor. Open-loop estimators or closed-loop observers are used for this purpose. They differ with respect to accuracy, robustness, and sensitivity against model parameter variations. Dynamic performance and steady-state speed accuracy in the low-speed range can be achieved by exploiting parasitic effects of the machine. The overview in this paper uses signal flow graphs of complex space vector quantities to provide an insightful description of the systems used in sensorless control of induction motors.

Sensorless Control of Induction Machines&#8212;With or Without Signal Injection?

A vector control of an induction motor by an estimated speed using an extended Kalman filter is proposed. With this method, the states are composed of stator current and rotor flux. The rotor speed is regarded as a parameter, and the composite states consist of the original states and the rotor speed. The extended Kalman filter is employed to identify the speed of an induction motor and rotor flux based on the measured quantities such as stator currents and DC link voltage. The estimated speed is used for vector control and overall speed control. Since the current control is performed at a synchronous rotating reference frame, the estimated speed information is also used for the reference frame transformation of the current controller. Computer simulations and experiments of the speed control have been carried out to test the usefulness of the speed estimation algorithm. The experimental results show that the performance of the speed estimation is very good. >

Speed sensorless vector control of induction motor using extended Kalman filter

A method of introduction motor drive that requires no shaft encoder is presented. This system has both torque and speed controls that are performed by vector control. The vector-control scheme is based on a rotor-flux speed control, which is performed by torque-producing current and rotor flux, derived from the stator voltages and currents. If it is possible to obtain both precise torque-producing current and rotor flux, this system will have a good torque and speed performance because of the direct control of the torque and rotor flux. The characteristics of the vector control employing stator voltages and currents usually deteriorate as the speed gets lower because the calculated rotor flux depends on the stator residence, and it is difficult to calculate rotor flux at standstill. The rotor-flux estimator is improved to reduce the stator-resistance influence and to make it possible to calculate rotor flux at standstill. >
