The governing equations for large-eddy simulation are derived from the application of a low-pass filter to the Navier–Stokes equations. It is often assumed that discrete operations performed on a particular grid act as an implicit filter, causing results to be sensitive to the mesh resolution. Alternatively, explicit filtering separates the filtering operation, and hence the resolved turbulence, from the underlying mesh distribution alleviating some of the grid sensitivities. We investigate the use of explicit filtering in large-eddy simulation in order to obtain numerical solutions that are grid independent. The convergence of simulations using a fixed filter width with varying mesh resolutions to a true large-eddy simulation solution is analyzed for a turbulent channel flow at Reτ=180, 395, and 640. By using explicit filtering, turbulent statistics and energy spectra are shown to be independent of the mesh resolution used.

Wall modelling in large-eddy simulation (LES) is necessary to overcome the prohibitive near-wall resolution requirements in high-Reynolds-number turbulent flows. Most existing wall models rely on assumptions about the state of the boundary layer and require a priori prescription of tunable coefficients. They also impose the predicted wall stress by replacing the no-slip boundary condition at the wall with a Neumann boundary condition in the wall-parallel directions while maintaining the no-transpiration condition in the wall-normal direction. In the present study, we first motivate and analyse the Robin (slip) boundary condition with transpiration (non-zero wall-normal velocity) in the context of wall-modelled LES. The effect of the slip boundary condition on the one-point statistics of the flow is investigated in LES of turbulent channel flow and a flat-plate turbulent boundary layer. It is shown that the slip condition provides a framework to compensate for the deficit or excess of mean momentum at the wall. Moreover, the resulting non-zero stress at the wall alleviates the well-known problem of the wall-stress under-estimation by current subgrid-scale (SGS) models (Jimenez & Moser, AIAA J., vol. 38 (4), 2000, pp. 605-612). Second, we discuss the requirements for the slip condition to be used in conjunction with wall models and derive the equation that connects the slip boundary condition with the stress at the wall. Finally, a dynamic procedure for the slip coefficients is formulated, providing a dynamic slip wall model free of a priori specified coefficients. The performance of the proposed dynamic wall model is tested in a series of LES of turbulent channel flow at varying Reynolds numbers, non-equilibrium three-dimensional transient channel flow and a zero-pressure-gradient flat-plate turbulent boundary layer. The results show that the dynamic wall model is able to accurately predict one-point turbulence statistics for various flow configurations, Reynolds numbers and grid resolutions.

A spectral multidomain penalty method model for the simulation of high Reynolds number localized incompressible stratified turbulence

The accuracy of large-eddy simulations is limited, among others, by the quality of the subgrid parameterisation and the numerical contamination of the smaller retained flow structures. We review the effects of discretisation and modelling errors from two different perspectives. We first show that spatial discretisation induces its own filter and compare the dynamic importance of this numerical filter to the basic large-eddy filter. The spatial discretisation modifies the large-eddy closure problem as is expressed by the difference between the discrete 'numerical stress tensor' and the continuous 'turbulent stress tensor'. This difference consists of a high-pass contribution associated with the specific numerical filter. Several central differencing methods are analysed and the importance of the subgrid resolution is established. Second, we review a database approach to assess the total simulation error and its numerical and modelling contributions. The interaction between the different sources of error is shown to lead to their partial cancellation. From this analysis one may identify an 'optimal refinement strategy' for a given subgrid model, discretisation method and flow conditions, leading to minimal total simulation error at a given computational cost. We provide full detail for homogeneous decaying turbulence in a 'Smagorinsky fluid'. The optimal refinement strategy is compared with the error reduction that arises from grid refinement of the dynamic eddy-viscosity model. The main trends of the optimal refinement strategy as a function of resolution and Reynolds number are found to be adequately followed by the dynamic model. This yields significant error reduction upon grid refinement although at coarse resolutions significant error levels remain. To address this deficiency, a new successive inverse polynomial interpolation procedure is proposed with which the optimal Smagorinsky constant may be efficiently approximated at a given resolution. The computational overhead of this optimisation procedure is shown to be well justified in view of the achieved reduction of the error level relative to the 'no-model' and dynamic model predictions.

Interacting errors in large-eddy simulation: a review of recent developments

Explicit filtering is considered as a means of controlling the numerical errors that result when finite-difference methods are used in large eddy simulation (LES) The notion that the finite-difference expressions themselves act as an effective filter is shown to be false for three-dimensional simulations performed on nonuniform meshes For consistency, the nonlinear terms in the Navier-Stokes equations should be filtered explicitly at each time step in order to insure that the spectral content of the solution remains fixed at the desired filter level The explicit filtering operation allows a separation between the filter size and the mesh spacing and can be used to control the impact of the numerical errors Numerical tests of the explicit filtering approach in turbulent channel flow are used to investigate the effectiveness of the explicit filtering approach and to assess its associated cost Explicit filtering is shown to improve the computed results, but this improvement comes at a rather high computational cost The explicitly-filtered approach is also compared with straightforward mesh refinement as an alternative means of improving the computed results Mesh refinement is also seen to increase the accuracy of the simulation but some traces of numerical error appear to persist in the solution
