Quantitative characterization of micro-topography a bibliography of industrial surface metrology

Investigates the effects of the most influential cutting parameters (cutting speed, feed rate, depth of cut, tool nose radius, tool length and work piece length) on surface roughness quality and on the formation of built‐up edge in a lathe dry turning process of mild carbon steel samples. A full factorial design (384 experiments), taking into account the three‐level interactions between the independent variables has been conducted. The results show that the following three‐level interactions: feed rate × cutting speed × depth of cut, feed rate × cutting speed × tool nose radius and tool nose radius × depth of cut × tool length have significant effects on surface roughness in this type of machining operation. Shows that the analysis of main effects alone and even two‐level interactions could lead to a false interpretation of the results. The analysis of variance revealed that the best surface roughness is achieved with a low feed rate, a large tool nose radius and a high cutting speed. The results also show that the depth of cut has no significant effect on surface roughness when operating at cutting speeds higher than 160m/min. Furthermore, it is shown that built‐up edge formation deteriorates surface roughness when machining mild carbon steel at specific feed rate, tool nose radius and cutting speed levels. Proposes a new model for evaluating the limiting cutting speed to avoid the built‐up edge formation. Finally, shows through experimentation that an increase in depth of cut would lead to improved surface roughness when tool vibration is increased.

In this paper, a comprehensive review is given of surface-texture measurement methods, characterisation of surfaces, surface finish and machine-condition monitoring using surface-texture information. A comparative evaluation of surface-texture modelling is provided. Directions in the areas of surface-texture research are also identified.

Profile Characterization of Manufactured Surfaces Using Random Function Excursion Technique—Part 1: Theory

In Part 1 of this paper an analytical procedure based on the theory of random excursions was described to characterize the texture of a machined surface in terms of four new parameters In this part a number of experimental results are presented to justify the validity of the proposed surface parameters Surface measurements were carried out on ten differently machined surfaces using a specially equipped measuring device with a direct cable link to a hybrid computer The theoretically computed surface parameters compare favorably with the measurements made on the actual surface profiles that were recorded experimentally One of the advantages of the surface parameters presented in this paper is that they correspond directly to the mechanical properties of the machined component and hence can be used readily in specifications Further, the results of this paper show that i) the sampling length is essentially a high-pass filter with geometrically defined characteristics, and ii) the crest and valley excursion parameters are adaptable for both “on-line” and “off-line” surface evaluation The method presented is well-suited for application to computer-aided manufacturing without any special modifications Based on this investigation, a proposal for a mechanical stylus system for “online” surface measurements is also made
