Wireless sensor networks are emerging as an important area for communications. They enable a wealth of new applications including surveillance, building control, factory automation, and in-vehicle sensing. The sensor nodes have to operate under severe constraints on energy consumption and form factor, and provide the ability for precise self-location of the nodes. These requirements can be fulfilled very well by various forms of ultra-wide-band (UWB) transmission technology. We discuss various techniques and tradeoffs in UWB systems and indicate that time-hopping and frequency-hopping impulse radio physical layers combined with simple multiple-access techniques like ALOHA are suitable designs. We also describe the IEEE 802.15.4a standard, an important system that adopts UWB impulse radio to ensure robust data communications and precision ranging. In order to accommodate heterogeneous networks, it uses specific modulation, coding, and ranging waveforms that can be detected well by both coherent and noncoherent receivers.

UWB Systems for Wireless Sensor Networks

Reactive matching is extended to wide bandwidths using the impedance property of LC-ladder filters. In this paper, we present a systematic method to design wideband low-noise amplifiers. An SiGe amplifier with on-chip matching network spanning 3-10 GHz delivers 21-dB peak gain, 2.5-dB noise figure, and -1-dBm input IP3 at 5 GHz, with a 10-mA bias current.

A 3-10-Ghz low-noise amplifier with wideband LC-ladder matching network

The need for low-complexity devices with low-power consumption motivates the application of suboptimal noncoherent ultra-wideband (UWB) receivers. This article provides an overview of the state of the art of recent research activities in this field. It introduces energy detection and autocorrelation receiver front ends with a focus on architectures that perform the initial signal processing tasks in the analog domain, such that the receiver does not need to sample the UWB received signals at Nyquist rate. Common signaling and multiple access schemes are reviewed for both front ends. An elaborate section illustrates various performance tradeoffs to highlight preferred system choices. Practical issues are discussed, including, for low-data-rate schemes, the allowed power allocation per pulse according to the regulator's ruling and the estimated power consumption of a receiver chip. A large part is devoted to signal processing steps needed in a digital receiver. It starts with synchronization and time-of-arrival estimation schemes, introduces studies about the narrowband interference problem, and describes solutions for high-data-rate and multiple access communications. Drastic advantages concerning complexity and robustness justify the application of noncoherent UWB systems, particularly for low-data-rate systems.

Noncoherent ultra-wideband systems

In this paper, we propose a linear-programming (LP) approach to the problem of nonline-of-sight (NLOS) mitigation in ad hoc ultrawideband wireless networks. The locations of ldquounlocalizedrdquo nodes can be estimated using range or distance estimates from location-aware ldquoanchorrdquo nodes. In the absence of LOS between the unlocalized and anchor nodes, e.g., in indoor networks, the NLOS range estimates can be significantly biased. The direct incorporation of these biased range estimates into practical location estimators, such as the least squares estimator, without the mitigation of these bias errors, can potentially lead to severe degradation in the accuracy of node-location estimates. On the other hand, with certain geometries of anchor nodes, NLOS range estimates can be used to improve the accuracy of location estimation. Furthermore, discarding the biased range estimates may not be a viable option, as the number of range estimates available may be limited. We present a novel NLOS-bias mitigation scheme based on LP, that 1) allows us to incorporate NLOS range information into location estimation, but 2) does not allow NLOS bias errors to degrade node-localization accuracy.

NLOS Mitigation Using Linear Programming in Ultrawideband Location-Aware Networks

Future advanced radio-frequency identification (RFID) systems are expected to provide both identification and high-definition localization of objects with improved reliability and security while maintaining low power consumption and cost. Ultrawide bandwidth (UWB) technology is a promising solution for next generation RFID systems to overcome most of the limitations of the current narrow bandwidth RFID technology such as: reduced area coverage, insufficient ranging resolution for accurate localization, sensitivity to interference, and scarce multiple-access capability. In this paper, a survey of current progress in the application of the UWB technology for RFID systems is presented with particular attention to low-complexity solutions for high-definition tag localization.

Ultrawide Bandwidth RFID: The Next Generation?

With the latest improvements in device size, power consumption, and communications, sensor networks are becoming increasingly more popular. There has also been a great increase in the popularity of commercial applications based on ultrawideband (UWB). Impulse radio (IR) based UWB technology utilizes noise-like signal, has potentially low complexity and low cost, is resistant to severe multipath, and has very good time domain resolution allowing for location and tracking applications. In this paper, the architecture and performance of a noncoherent low complexity UWB impulse radio based transceiver designed for low data rate, low cost sensor network applications is presented. The UWB-IR transmitter is based on a delay locked loop (DLL) and UWB monocycle pulse generator. The UWB-IR receiver utilises a noncoherent, energy detection based approach, which makes it largely independent of the shape of the transmit waveform and robust to multipath channels. The test circuits are designed for 0.35 /spl mu/m SiGe BiCMOS technology. This paper presents system simulations results as well as the performance of key functional blocks of the designed UWB application specific integrated circuit (ASIC) transceiver architecture. The simulated power consumption of UWB-IR transceiver circuits is 136 mW with 100% duty cycle with a 3.3 V power supply.
