The present invention is directed an oriented, foamed article having an ink-receptive surface, and a method of making the article. The invention provides a printable substrate comprising at least one high melt-strength, oriented polypropylene foam layer having an ink-receptive surface. The high melt-strength polypropylene having a melt strength of of 25 to 60 cN at 190° C. The ink-receptive surface may comprise and oxidizing treatment, such as corona or flame-treatment of the foam surface, or may comprise an ink-receptive coating, such as a primer coating, on the foam surface. The oriented foam article is particularly useful in the preparation of printed security documents such as currency, stock and bond certificates, birth and death certificates, land titles and abstracts and the like.

A polymeric foam composition is provided for use as a substrate in decorative compositions having at least one decorative layer on the substrate, wherein the substrate is prepared by foaming a composition made of (i) a resin matrix of one or more polymers selected from acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS) polymers, polycarbonates, polystyrenes, polyphenylene oxide and polyvinyl chloride polymers, preferably obtained from recycled plastics, and (ii) a filler, using one or more blowing agents. A process for producing a foamed thermoplastic resin article is disclosed, comprising separately melt kneading the first thermoplastic resin composition comprising a first thermoplastic resin and 10 to 400 parts by weight per 100 parts by weight of the first thermoplastic resin of a filler and constituting an unfoamed layer at the time of extrusion molding, and the second thermoplastic resin composition comprising a second thermoplastic resin and a foaming agent and constituting a foamed layer at the time of extrusion molding, by the use of extruders, and extruding the two resin compositions in the form of laminate through a T die.

Process for producing foamed thermoplastic resin articles

A synthetic resin structural material comprising surface layers and an intersticed inner layer having an expansion ratio between 1.3 and 5, which are integrally bonded together through interfused layers thereof. A process for producing the above-described synthetic resin structural material, comprising introducing surface layerconstituting molten resin and an inner layer-constituting molten resin with a blowing agent blended therein into a die from separate entrances respectively, joining the flows of the respective resins within the die in such a manner that the inner layer-constituting resin flow is sandwiched by the surface layerconstituting resin flows and the resins are not mixed with each other, leading the joined resin flows towards an exit of the die while gradually cooling and hardening the surface layerconstituting resins and applying a suitable pressure to the outer surfaces of said resin flows, discharging the joined resin flows from said die, whereupon said pressure is removed allowing, the inner layer-constituting resin to foam into an intersticed structure, and then regulating the thickness of the thus formed structural material by thickness regulating members.
