Radiative transitions and the P wave levels in charmonium

Since the initial development of charged particle colliders in the middle of the 20th century, these advanced scientific instruments have been at the forefront of scientific discoveries in high energy physics over the past 60 years. Collider accelerator technology and beam physics have progressed immensely and modern facilities now operate at energies and luminosities many orders of magnitude greater than the pioneering colliders of the early 1960s. In addition, the field of colliders remains extremely dynamic and continues to develop many innovative approaches. Indeed, several novel concepts are currently being considered for designing and constructing even more powerful future colliders. In this paper, we first review the colliding beam method and the history of colliders, and then present, in detail, the major achievements of operational machines and the key features of near-term collider projects that are currently under development. We conclude with an analysis of numerous proposals and studies for far-future colliders. The evaluation of their respective potentials reveals tantalizing prospects for further significant breakthroughs in the collider field.

Modern and Future Colliders

Investigations into the production of mechanical oscillations in aluminum cylinders by high energy electrons reveal that the mechanism of excitation is a "hot rod model" in which the shower deposits heat in the bar and the hot zone expands causing mechanical vibrations. The conversion efficiency of this process is evaluated in these experiments. The hot rod mechanism does not present a significant background for gravitational events from cosmic rays in room temperature gravitational radiation detectors.

Mechanical Oscillations Induced by Penetrating Particles

Measurements of the cross section for the reaction ${e}^{+}{e}^{\ensuremath{-}}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{e}^{+}{e}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ (Bhabha scattering) at angles close to 90\ifmmode^\circ\else\textdegree\fi{}, relative to Bhabha scattering at 4\ifmmode^\circ\else\textdegree\fi{}, are reported at center-of-mass energies of 7.0 and 7.4 GeV. The results are in agreement with quantum electrodynamics, and new limits on cutoff parameters for the photon propagator are given.

Measurements of the Reaction e + e − → e + e − at Center-of-Mass Energies of 7.0 and 7.4 GeV

We report measurements of e+e−→e+e−, e+e−→γγ, and e+e−→μ+μ− at angles close to 90°, relative to Bhabha scattering at 3.7°, at a center-of-mass energy equal to 5.2 GeV. The results are found to be consistent with the predictions of quantum electro-dynamics.
