This paper describes a new approach to low level image processing; in particular, edge and corner detection and structure preserving noise reduction.

Non-linear filtering is used to define which parts of the image are closely related to each individual pixel; each pixel has associated with it a local image region which is of similar brightness to that pixel. The new feature detectors are based on the minimization of this local image region, and the noise reduction method uses this region as the smoothing neighbourhood. The resulting methods are accurate, noise resistant and fast.

Details of the new feature detectors and of the new noise reduction method are described, along with test results.

SUSAN—A New Approach to Low Level Image Processing

We present a new method of digital steganography, entitled spread spectrum image steganography (SSIS). Steganography, which means "covered writing" in Greek, is the science of communicating in a hidden manner. Following a discussion of steganographic communication theory and review of existing techniques, the new method, SSIS, is introduced. This system hides and recovers a message of substantial length within digital imagery while maintaining the original image size and dynamic range. The hidden message can be recovered using appropriate keys without any knowledge of the original image. Image restoration, error-control coding, and techniques similar to spread spectrum are described, and the performance of the system is illustrated. A message embedded by this method can be in the form of text, imagery, or any other digital signal. Applications for such a data-hiding scheme include in-band captioning, covert communication, image tamperproofing, authentication, embedded control, and revision tracking.

Spread spectrum image steganography

Five different constant false alarm rate (CFAR) radar processing schemes are considered and their performances analyzed in homogeneous and nonhomogeneous backgrounds, the latter specifically being the multiple target environment and regions of clutter transitions. The average detection threshold for each of the CFAR schemes was computed to measure and compare the detection performance in homogeneous noise background. The exponential noise model was used for clear and clutter backgrounds to get closed-form expressions. The processor types compared are: the cell-averaging CFAR, the 'greatest of' CFAR, the 'smallest of' CFAR, the ordered-statistics CFAR, and a modified ordered-statistics processor called the trimmed-mean CFAR. >

Analysis of CFAR processors in homogeneous background

Underwater images suffer from blurring effects, low contrast, and grayed out colors due to the absorption and scattering effects under the water. Many image enhancement algorithms for improving the visual quality of underwater images have been developed. Unfortunately, no well-accepted objective measure exists that can evaluate the quality of underwater images similar to human perception. Predominant underwater image processing algorithms use either a subjective evaluation, which is time consuming and biased, or a generic image quality measure, which fails to consider the properties of underwater images. To address this problem, a new nonreference underwater image quality measure (UIQM) is presented in this paper. The UIQM comprises three underwater image attribute measures: the underwater image colorfulness measure (UICM), the underwater image sharpness measure (UISM), and the underwater image contrast measure (UIConM). Each attribute is selected for evaluating one aspect of the underwater image degradation, and each presented attribute measure is inspired by the properties of human visual systems (HVSs). The experimental results demonstrate that the measures effectively evaluate the underwater image quality in accordance with the human perceptions. These measures are also used on the AirAsia 8501 wreckage images to show their importance in practical applications.

Human-Visual-System-Inspired Underwater Image Quality Measures

A family of nonlinear filters based on order statistics is presented. A mathematical tool derived through robust estimation theory, order statistics has allowed engineers to develop nonlinear filters with excellent robustness properties. These filters are well suited to digital image processing because they preserve the edges and the fine details of an image much better than conventional linear filters. The probabilistic and deterministic properties of the best known and most widely used filter in this family, the median filter, are discussed. In addition, the authors consider filters that, while not based on order statistics, are related to them through robust estimation theory. A table that ranks nonlinear filters under a variety of performance criteria is included. Most of the topics treated are very active research areas, and the applications are varied, including HDTV, multichannel signal processing of geophysical and ECG/EEG data, and a variety of telecommunications applications. >

Order statistics in digital image processing

Suppose that X is a finite set of N numbers, The α-trimmed mean of X is obtained by sorting X into ascending order, removing (trimming) a fixed fraction \alpha(0 \leq \alpha \leq 0.5) from the high and low ends of the sorted set, and computing the average of the remaining values. When applied to a sliding window of length LW, the α-trimming process is called α-trim filtering. For α = 0.5, the α-trimmed mean of a set is the median of the set and the filtering operation is called median filtering. Repeated application of a median filter to the output of a previous median filter of the same length LW eventually produces a signal which is invariant to median filtering. This final signal is called the root signal. This paper explains the relationship between α-trimmed means and median filters, derives a simple straightforward and fast algorithm for applying a median filter, and provides a new explanation of the convergence of repeated median filtering to the root signal. The latter result incorporates an approach which permits generalization of the associated concepts to a larger class of "index map" filters.
