A catalyst material comprises an aluminum-stabilized ceria which optionally may be combined with an activated alumina and may also comprise one or more platinum group metal catalytic components. A method of making the material includes impregnating bulk ceria or a bulk ceria precursor with an aluminum compound and calcining the impregnated ceria to provide an aluminum-stabilized ceria. The bulk ceria advantageously comprises a high purity (at least 90 weight percent CeO2) ceria and may be admixed with activated aluminia having one or more platinum group metal catalytic components dispersed thereon. The catalyst material may be coated onto a suitable carrier substrate and then calcined. Specified minimum levels of the aluminum-stabilized bulk ceria are advantageously employed in the catalyst materials of the invention. The bulk ceria may have one or more preferably non-rhodium platinum group metal catalytic components dispersed thereon, e.g., a platinum catalytic component, and one or more platinum group metal catalytic components dispersed on the activated alumina.

Aluminum-stabilized ceria catalyst compositions, and methods of making the same

A method of ceramic coating a substrate by thermodeposition from a sol made by hydrolyzing and peptizing organometallic compounds in water. The sol contains colloidal particles having a size between about 0.0005 micron and about 10 microns and the deposited coatings have good packing characteristics as well as smoothness. Composite coatings are also deposited which contain reinforcing materials such as SiC embedded in the coated matrix. These coatings afford the substrate onto which they are coated excellent wear, anti-corrosion and insulating characteristics.

Deposition of ceramic coatings using sol-gel processing with application of a thermal gradient

A porous inorganic membrane for use with a membrane device having a porous support, the membrane including refractory particles bound to each other and to the support by a thermally reactive inorganic binder which reacts at a temperature below that at which the refractory particles react. Further, a method of forming a porous inorganic membrane on a support by applying a coating of a mixture of refractory particles and a thermally reactive inorganic binder to the support. The inorganic binder reacts at a first temperature lower than a second temperature at which the refractory particles sinter. The method further includes firing the support to a firing temperature at least as high as the first temperature and less than the second temperature to react the inorganic binder, and cooling the support to form the porous membrane.

Method of forming a porous inorganic membrane on a porous support using a reactive inorganic binder

Composites in the form of a three-dimensional framework or skeleton of ceic particles are formed by a low cost, low temperature sintering process which decomposes a pre-ceramic inorganic or organic precursor. Upon heating, preferably in air, the precursor decomposes to form a ceramic phase in the form of necks between the individual ceramic particles. The properties of the resulting porous ceramic bodies can be modified, such as toughened by impregnation with monomers, oligomers or polymers which are polymerized or cured in situ. Such composites find use as cosmetic products or protheses for humans and animals, such as dental restoratives and bone implants. Methods of fabrication are disclosed which include the use of a pre-ceramic polymer as a binder for the ceramic particles which forms the necks of material between the individual ceramic particles upon firing.

Pre-ceramic polymers in fabrication of ceramic composites

A metal-coated substrate, e.g., of glass, ceramic, or a hydroxy-functionalized material, wherein the improvement comprises a polysilicate, titania, or alumina interlayer between the substrate and the metal coating. The interlayer may have a porous microstructure, e.g., a polysilicate interlayer with an average pore size on the order of 50-150 Angstroms. Such articles, e.g., in the form of metal-coated fibers, may suitably be employed as reinforcing media in material composites having utility in structural applications, such as EMI shielding elements. Also disclosed is a corresponding method for forming a metal coating on a substrate by the provision of an interlayer of the above type. The interlayer may suitably be formed by applying to the substrate a sol gel dispersion of the polysilicate, titania, or alumina material, followed by drying of the applied dispersion.

Sol gel formation of polysilicate, titania, and alumina interlayers for enhanced adhesion of metal films on substrates

A mixture is prepared by mixing alumina sol and activated alumina which contains not less than 60 Wt % of delta-alumina. The mixture is thereafter coated on a relatively small specific surface area monolithic catalyst carrier. After being dried, the coated carrier is fired to give a high specific surface area catalyst carrier.
