Functional π-Gelators and Their Applications

In 2008, we reported a new class of pillar-shaped macrocyclic hosts, known as “pillar[n]arenes”. Today, pillar[n]arenes are recognized as key players in supramolecular chemistry because of their facile synthesis, unique pillar shape, versatile functionality, interesting host–guest properties, and original supramolecular assembly characteristics, which have resulted in numerous electrochemical and biomedical material applications. In this Review, we have provided historical background to macrocyclic chemistry, followed by a detailed discussion of the fundamental properties of pillar[n]arenes, including their synthesis, structure, and host–guest properties. Furthermore, we have discussed the applications of pillar[n]arenes to materials science, as well as their applications in supramolecular chemistry, in terms of their fundamental properties. Reaction of aryloxyacetic acid hydrazide or arenedioxydiacetic acid hydrazide with 2-ethoxybenzoy chloride and ammonium thiocyanate under the condition of solid–liquid phase transfer catalysis using polyethylene glycol-400 (PEG-400) as the catalyst yielded the corresponding thiosemicarbazide or bisthiosemicarbazide derivatives of 2-ethoxybenzoic acid in good-to-excellent yield.

PHASE TRANSFER CATALYZED SYNTHESIS OF THIOSEMICARBAZIDE AND bis-THIOSEMICARBAZIDE DERIVATIVES OF 2-ETHOXYBENZOIC ACID

A novel 3D supramolecular polymer network gel (DP5G) was successfully constructed by easy to synthesize tripodal guest (SZ) and thioacetylhydrazone functionalized di-pillar[5]arene host (DP5). Interestingly, the DP5G showed aggregation induced emission (AIE). Moreover, the DP5G displayed a 3D network structure, which was used to dye removal experiments. Notably, the xerogel DP5G could effectively remove cationic dyes (including crystal violet and rhodamine B) from aqueous solution and the removal percentages are 96.3% and 95.4%, respectively. In addition, the maximal adsorption capacity of DP5G towards crystal violet and rhodamine B are 19.65 mg/g and 22.85 mg/g, respectively. The stability of the 3D supramolecular polymer network gel (DP5G) was further investigated, which exhibited excellent stability toward outer stimuli such as pH, competitive agents, oxidant and reducing agent.

A pillar[5]arene-based supramolecular polymer network gel and its application in adsorption and removal of organic dye in water

Two kinds of N-ethoxycarbonyl-N′-arylthiourea were synthesized, and their structure was determined by X-ray diffraction. There are inter-and intramolecular hydrogen bonds in these compounds. In the crystals, the compounds were assembled to one-dimensional catenulate supramolecular structure by intermolecular hydrogen bonds.

Weak Interaction and Supramolecular Structure of N -ethoxycarbonyl- N ′-arylthiourea

L -aspartic acid zinc was synthesized by a rapid and convenient method in high yield under microwave conditions, and its single crystal structure was analyzed by X-ray diffraction. The structure unit of the title compound is [Zn( L -Asp)(H 2 O) 2 ] •H 2 O, which is a bicyclo-complex forming a spiral linear polymer via coordination bonds. The spiral linear polymers are assembled as a three-dimensional supramolecule by intermolecular hydrogen bonds. The crystal belongs to the orthorhombic crystal system, P2(1)2(1)2(1) space group, a =0.7830(3) nm, b =0.9369(4) nm, c =11.599(5) nm, α = β = γ =90.00°, V =0.8509(6) nm 3 , Z =4, D c=1.955 g/cm 3 , F (000)=512, μ =2.289. The toxicity of the title compound is lower than that of glutamic acid zinc and zinc sulfate.
