Particulate photocatalysts for overall water splitting

In recent years, nanocrystals of metal sulfide materials have attracted scientific research interest for renewable energy applications due to the abundant choice of materials with easily tunable electronic, optical, physical and chemical properties. Metal sulfides are semiconducting compounds where sulfur is an anion associated with a metal cation; and the metal ions may be in mono-, bi- or multi-form. The diverse range of available metal sulfide materials offers a unique platform to construct a large number of potential materials that demonstrate exotic chemical, physical and electronic phenomena and novel functional properties and applications. To fully exploit the potential of these fascinating materials, scalable methods for the preparation of low-cost metal sulfides, heterostructures, and hybrids of high quality must be developed. This comprehensive review indicates approaches for the controlled fabrication of metal sulfides and subsequently delivers an overview of recent progress in tuning the chemical, physical, optical and nano- and micro-structural properties of metal sulfide nanocrystals using a range of material fabrication methods. For hydrogen energy production, three major approaches are discussed in detail: electrocatalytic hydrogen generation, powder photocatalytic hydrogen generation and photoelectrochemical water splitting. A variety of strategies such as structural tuning, composition control, doping, hybrid structures, heterostructures, defect control, temperature effects and porosity effects on metal sulfide nanocrystals are discussed and how they are exploited to enhance performance and develop future energy materials. From this literature survey, energy conversion currently relies on a limited range of metal sulfides and their composites, and several metal sulfides are immature in terms of their dissolution, photocorrosion and long-term durability in electrolytes during water splitting. Future research directions for innovative metal sulfides should be closely allied to energy and environmental issues, along with their advanced characterization, and developing new classes of metal sulfide materials with well-defined fabrication methods.

Recent advances in metal sulfides: from controlled fabrication to electrocatalytic, photocatalytic and photoelectrochemical water splitting and beyond

Visible light-driven water splitting using cheap and robust photocatalysts is one of the most exciting ways to produce clean and renewable energy for future generations. Cutting edge research within the field focuses on so-called “Z-scheme” systems, which are inspired by the photosystem II–photosystem I (PSII/PSI) coupling from natural photosynthesis. A Z-scheme system comprises two photocatalysts and generates two sets of charge carriers, splitting water into its constituent parts, hydrogen and oxygen, at separate locations. This is not only more efficient than using a single photocatalyst, but practically it could also be safer. Researchers within the field are constantly aiming to bring systems toward industrial level efficiencies by maximizing light absorption of the materials, engineering more stable redox couples, and also searching for new hydrogen and oxygen evolution cocatalysts. Mimicking Natural Photosynthesis: Solar to Renewable H2 Fuel Synthesis by Z-Scheme Water Splitting Systems.

Metal sulfides are highly active photocatalysts for water reduction to form H2 under visible light irradiation, whereas they are unfavorable for water oxidation to form O2 because of severe self-photooxidation (i.e., photocorrosion). Construction of a Z-scheme system is a useful strategy to split water into H2 and O2 using such photocorrosive metal sulfides because the photogenerated holes in metal sulfides are efficiently transported away. Here, we demonstrate powdered Z-schematic water splitting under visible light and simulated sunlight irradiation by combining metal sulfides as an H2-evolving photocatalyst, reduced graphene oxide (RGO) as an electron mediator, and a visible-light-driven BiVO4 as an O2-evolving photocatalyst. This Z-schematic photocatalyst composite is also active in CO2 reduction using water as the sole electron donor under visible light.

Water Splitting and CO2 Reduction under Visible Light Irradiation Using Z-Scheme Systems Consisting of Metal Sulfides, CoOx-Loaded BiVO4, and a Reduced Graphene Oxide Electron Mediator.

Solar hydrogen generation via photocatalytic water splitting represents an attractive strategy to address the global energy crisis and environmental pollution issues. CdS-based photocatalysts, including nanosized CdS powder, CdS-based solid solutions and CdS quantum dots, have attracted significant attention for photocatalytic H2 production due to their unique advantages, including strong visible light absorption capacity, suitable band edge levels and excellent electronic charge transfer. This review focuses on recent advances in material design and technological aspects of CdS-based photocatalysts for applications in photocatalytic H2 production. A brief overview of basic concepts and principles of photocatalytic water splitting was given in the Introduction section, followed by the basic properties of CdS. Then, the utilization of three main types of CdS-based semiconductor photocatalysts for solar H2 generation is introduced, and those important factors which can determine the photocatalytic performance were also discussed in detail. Special consideration has been given to the effect of morphology, interfacial junctions, exposing facet and cocatalysts on the photocatalytic performance of CdS-based photocatalysts. Finally, a roadmap of possible future directions to further explore the research field of CdS-based photocatalysts for solar H2 generation is also discussed.

Cadmium sulfide-based nanomaterials for photocatalytic hydrogen production

Upon forming a solid solution between CuGaS2 and ZnS, we have successfully developed a highly active (CuGa)(1-x)Zn(2x)S2 photocatalyst for H2 evolution in the presence of sacrificial reagents under visible light irradiation. The Ru-loaded (CuGa)0.8Zn0.4S2 functioned as a H2-evolving photocatalyst in a Z-scheme system with BiVO4 of an O2-evolving photocatalyst and Co complexes of an electron mediator. The Z-scheme system split water into H2 and O2 under visible light and simulated sunlight irradiation. The (CuGa)(1-x)Zn(2x)S2 possessed a p-type semiconductor character. The photoelectrochemical cell with a Ru-loaded (CuGa)0.5ZnS2 photocathode and a CoO(x)-modified BiVO4 photoanode split water even without applying an external bias. Thus, we successfully demonstrated that the metal sulfide material group can be available for Z-scheme and electrochemical systems to achieve solar water splitting into H2 and O2.
