A Message Storage and Deliver System (MSDS) (10) is connected to a plurality of DID phone lines and receives facsimile messages, voice messages, and data messages. The messages are stored in memory and are also converted into appropriate hyper-test mark-up language (HTML) (30) files. The users can then connect to the MSDS (10) through the Internet (30). The users of the MSDS (10) therefore have the advantage of being able to receive their messages at any time and at any location at a reasonable cost. The user can also telephone the MSDS (10) to listen to messages or to alter the service provided by the MSDS (10).

Message storage and delivery system

A Message Storage and Deliver System (MSDS) is connected to the public switched telephone network (PSTN) and receives incoming calls with these calls being facsimile, voice, or data transmissions. The MSDS detects the type of call and stores the message signal in a database. The MSDS is also connected to the Internet and has a hyper-text transfer protocol deamon (HTTPD) for receiving requests from users. The HTTPD forwards requests for certain files or messages to a network server which transmits at least part of the message to the HTTPD and then to the user. In addition to requests for certain documents, the HTTPD may also receive a request in the form of a search query. The search query is forwarded from the HTTPD to an application program for conducting the search of the database. The results of the search are forwarded through the HTTPD to the user. The user may then select one or more files or messages from the search results and may save the search for later reference.

Systems and methods for storing, delivering, and managing messages

In accordance with some embodiments, a computer-implemented method for use in conjunction with a device with a touch screen display is disclosed. In the method, a movement of an object on or near the touch screen display is detected. In response to detecting the movement, an electronic document displayed on the touch screen display is translated in a first direction. If an edge of the electronic document is reached while translating the electronic document in the first direction while the object is still detected on or near the touch screen display, an area beyond the edge of the document is displayed. After the object is no longer detected on or near the touch screen display, the document is translated in a second direction until the area beyond the edge of the document is no longer displayed.

A data communication apparatus wherein the stealthiness has been enhanced by significantly increasing the time required for a wiretapper to decrypt an encrypted text. The data communication apparatus is constituted by connecting a data transmitting apparatus and a data receiving apparatus via a transmission path. The data transmitting apparatus receives a first predetermined initial value (key information) and information data, generates a multi-valued signal the level of which varies substantially like a random number, and converts the multi-valued signal to a modulated signal of a predetermined modulation format for transmission. The data receiving apparatus demodulates the modulated signal to output the multi-valued signal, and then reproduces the information data from the multi-valued signal and a second predetermined initial value (key information) that is received.

Data communication apparatus

A laptop device includes a personal computer, a cellular transceiver, a speakerphone, and a hybrid communications control unit. The device has connectors for attaching a headset, cellular control unit, land telephone line, and additional speakers and microphones. The micro-processor-controlled hybrid communications control unit includes a modem, a data access arrangement, and a tone generator as well as digital, analog, and power switches. The hybrid communications control unit switches the communications components and provides, under program control, the proper protocols, level, and impedance matching to connect the modem, speakerphone, headset, speaker/microphone, or cellular control unit to the landline or to the cellular network via the transceiver. Matching and switching operations are automatic and transparent to the user. The unit can also connect two of the terminal devices or connect the cellular and landlines for call relaying. The device is capable of connecting plural calls at the same time. The hybrid communications control unit may be controlled by its internal firmware, by toggle switches, or by commands issued from the personal computer.

A facsimile machine including a data processing system for processing data to be transmitted and received data according to a predetermined manner, which system typically comprises a MODEM, a buffer and a CODEC. The facsimile machine includes two or more interface units dedicated for performing a wire communication function for communicating image data in a wire communication mode using a telephone network and a radio communication function for communicating image data in a radio or wireless communication mode using radio waves. The radio/wire switchable facsimile machine includes a switch which switchingly establishes the wire mode or the radio mode. In one embodiment, the switch is manually operated. In a second embodiment the switch automatically establishes either one of the wire and radio modes in accordance with the current status of a predetermined signal, typically an off-hook signal, which indicates whether the handset of a telephone unit is hooked or unhooked or whether the microphone of a radio set is hooked or unhooked.

The personal computer is connected to the facsimile apparatus through 8 parallel data lines, a pair of unidirectional control signal lines and 3 bidirectional control signal lines. The combination has following four operation modes; recording mode where the data from the computer is recorded by a plotter in the facsimile apparatus, image input mode where the data from a scanner in the facsimile apparatus is input to the computer, transmission/transfer mode where the data from the computer is transmitted to another facsimile, and reception/transfer mode where the data from another facsimile is input to the computer.

A data processing apparatus, such as a printer, or particularly a facsimile machine, has a power supply 19 with a dc/dc converter 194 providing +/- 12V and +5V, and a connector 191 which can be selectively coupled to a mains - derived 12V dc power source, or to a cigarette lighter socket in a vehicle, or to a nicad battery (Figs 5A, B, C), each providing a 12V input across connector terminals 2, 3. When the mains-derived source or the battery source is in use, terminal 1 also receives 12V thereby energising a relay 192 so that lines A, B are switched to receive the 12V source voltage directly, rather than the +12V output of converter 194 which is connected to lines A, B if the vehicle source is in use. Terminal 4 is grounded if the mains source is used and detection of this causes the apparatus to switch to a faster recording speed than that operative with the battery and vehicle sources. Heavy current loads connected to line A are only powered when a relay 195 is energised in response to detection of data to be transmitted/received. Such loads are disconnected by relay 195 if a circuit 193 senses low nicad battery voltage.
