High-resolution 3D imaging and modeling is an important application in the heritage field. We describe several demonstration projects conducted in collaboration with museums and conservation agencies.

Active optical 3D imaging for heritage applications

The registration problem of multiple range images is fundamentalfor many applications thatrely onprecise geometric models. We propose a robust registration method that can align multiple range images comprised of a large number of datapoints. The proposed method minimizes an error function that is constructed to be global against all range images, providing the ability to diffusively distribute errors instead of accumulating them. The minimization strategy is designed to be efficient and robust against outliers by using conjugate gradient search utilizing M-estimator. Also, for “better” point correspondence search, the laser reflectance strength is used as an additional attribute of each 3D data point. For robustness against data noise, the framework is designed not to use secondary information, i.e. surface normals, in its error metric. We describe the details of the proposed method, and present experimental results applying the proposed method to real data.

Robust Simultaneous Registration of Multiple Range Images

Texture mapping on scanned objects, that is, the method to map current color images on a 3D geometric model measured by a range sensor, is a key technique of photometric modeling for virtual reality. Usually range and color images are obtained from different viewing positions, through two independent range and color sensors. Thus, in order to map those color images on the geometric model, it is necessary to determine relative relations between these two viewpoints. In this paper, we propose a new calibration method for the texture mapping; the method utilizes reflectance images and iterative pose estimation based on a robust Mestimator. Moreover, since a 2D texture image taken from one viewing point is a partial view of an object, several images must be mapped onto the object in order to cover the entire 3D geometric model. In this paper, we propose the new simultaneous registration technique of several images and geometric model based on 2D-3D edge correspondence and the epipolar constraint between images.

Simultaneous 2D images and 3D geometric model registration for texture mapping utilizing reflectance attribute

This chapter presents an overview of our efforts in modeling cultural heritage through observation. These efforts span three aspects: how to create geometric models of cultural heritage; how to crate photometric models of cultural heritage; and how to integrate such virtual heritages with real scenes. For geometric model creation, we have developed a two-step method: simultaneous alignment and volumetric view merging. For photometric model creation, we have developed the eigen-texture rendering methods, which automatically create photorealistic models by observing the real objects. For the integration of virtual objects with real scenes, we have developed a method that renders virtual objects based on real illumination distribution. We have applied these component techniques to constructing a multimedia model of the Great Buddha of Kamakura, and demonstrated their effectiveness.
