A reinforced structural member (18) has a w-shaped reinforcement member (32) that carries a thermally expandable resin based material (36). The w-shaped reinforcement member (32) is placed in the channel (34) of a hollow structural member (20) over a transverse pin (30) which fits through the slot of the reinforcement member (32). The structural member (20) is heated to expand the resin based material (36) which locks the reinforcement member (32) in place, thereby significantly strengthening the structural member.

Expandable sealant and baffle compositions and methods of forming and using such compositions are provided wherein the compositions comprise a first thermoplastic resin, an epoxy resin, preferably a second thermoplastic resin different from the first thermoplastic resin, and optionally a compound selected from the group consisting of pigments, blowing agents, catalysts, curing agents, reinforcers, and mixtures thereof. The resulting compositions are formed as self-sustaining bodies which can be heat-expanded into a lightweight, high strength product for sealing hollow structural members of vehicles, substantially decreasing the noise which travels along the length of those members as well as strengthening those members with minimal increases in their weights. In a preferred embodiment, the first thermoplastic resin is an SBS block co-polymer, the epoxy resin is a bisphenol A-based liquid epoxy resin, the second thermoplastic resin is a polystyrene, and the reinforcer is hydrated amorphous silica. The compositions can be formed into free-standing, self-sustaining parts or into U-shaped members supported on lattice-type nylon supports.

Sound deadening and structural reinforcement compositions and methods of using the same

A coated abrasive article comprises a backing, a first binder on the backing, and a plurality of abrasive particles in the first binder. The first binder precursor is an energy-curable preferably, melt-processable resin containing an epoxy resin, an ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer, and a curing agent for crosslinking the epoxy resin that is cured to provide a crosslinked make coating. The above binder precursors of the invention are preferably free of homopolymers and copolymers of olefinic monomers. In another aspect, the invention also describes an energy curable first binder precursor containing an epoxy resin, an ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer, a polyfunctional acrylate component and a curing agent for crosslinking the epoxy resin that is cured to provide a crosslinked make coating. The invention also relates to a method of producing such coated abrasive articles and a surface-treated backing material.

Coated abrasive article

The invention relates to heat-curable, thermally expandable moulded parts prepared from a mixture of at least one solid reactive resin, at least one liquid reactive resin, at least one reactive resin having a flexibilizing effect as well as curing agents and/or accelerators or blowing agents. The moulded parts are suitable for the stiffening and/or reinforcement of thin-wall metal constructions and for stiffening hollow metallic light-weight structures. In comparison with known heat-curable, thermally expandable moulded parts the moulded parts provided for by the invention are characterized by improved dimensional stability in the uncured state and lower surface tack. They are also characterized by minimum odour release during curing.

Heat-curable, thermally expandable moulded part

A UV curable, flexible, paintable composition is disclosed. The disclosed composition has enhanced durability, thick and thin film adhesion, resistance to mold growth and dimensional changes while reducing solvent emissions. The disclosed composition reduces, if not eliminates, runs and drips during the thermal bake cycles which are associated with using conventional compositions in automotive applications.

The present invention provides a foamable epoxy resin composition (A) 100 parts by weight of a liquid epoxy resin (B) 05-20 parts by weight of a latent curing agent, (C) 05-15 parts by weight of a foaming agent having a decomposition temperature of 100°-220° C, (D) 005-5 parts by weight of a surface active agent and (E) 10-200 parts by weight of a rubbery elastomer or a powdery halogen-free thermoplastic resin of 150 μm or less in average particle diameter, which composition has a melt viscosity of 25×10 3 -5×10 4 dPa·s at the decomposition temperature of said foaming agent The composition can provide a foamed material of rigidity and good heat resistance, having an expansion ratio of 5 times or more and a dense cell structure of 05 mm or less in average cell diameter
