Environmental factors such as air pollution and increase in global warming by using polluting fuels are the most important reasons of using renewable and clean energy that runs in global community. Wind energy is one of the most suitable and widely used kind of renewable energy which had been in consideration so well. This paper introduces an electric power generation system of wind based on Y-source and improved Y-source inverter to deliver optimal electrical power to the network. This new converter is from impedance source converters family. This presented converter has more degrees of freedom to adjust voltage gain and modulation. Also, by limiting the range of simultaneous control (shooting through) while it maintains the highest power of maximizer, it can operate in higher modulation range. This causes the reduce of stress in switching and thus it will improve the quality of output. Recommended system had been simulated in MATLAB/Simulink and shown results indicate accurate functionality.

Using Y-source network as a connector between turbine and network in the structure of variable speed wind turbine

this paper investigates the impact of photovoltaic (PV) penetration on the distribution system protection. Al-Karak medium voltage network has been considered as a case study to analyze this impact and propose recommendations for better operation of the network. A New Thaniyah 132/33-kV based substation and its four 33-kV feeders have been selected for this study. The planned 5-MW PV plant of Mu'tah University, the planned and existing 5-MW PV plants of Kempinski Hotel in Al-Karak city in Jordan have been considered in this case study. Different scenarios with different levels of PV penetration have been assumed and investigated during different faults. The assumed levels of PV penetration have been based on the actual existing and planned PV plants connected to Al-Karak medium voltage distribution system. CYMDIST/CYME simulation software has been used to simulate and model the network of the case study, the integrated PV plants and the used protective devices. The obtained results show no significant impact is observed if the protection schemes are properly coordinated, PV projects locations and their capacities are properly selected. However, new modes and settings of the existing protection schemes have been recommended to enhance the performance of the studied protection system.

Impact of Photovoltaic Penetration on the Distribution System Protection: A Case Study of 5-MW Plants of Mu'tah University and Kempinski Hotel

This paper presents an analysis in Matlab/Simulink of a three-phase photovoltaic system under balance and unbalance faults in Matlab/Simulink. The aim of this paper is to investigate the performance of the system under various types of fault. The simulation involved various types of faults occurring at different distances from the point of common coupling of the PV system. This paper also aimed to identify what type of fault that may severely damage the system. The simulation results presented in this paper show that the three-phase fault in the microgrid was severely affecting the system since it involved all the three phases of the system while the distance of the fault occurrence is less influenced in the system. The purpose of this research is to observe the effect on the system based on the types of faults occur and the distance faults occur.

As it is known, grid-connected PVs at the distribution level serve as promising solutions to the growth in electrical demand and a cleaner, more eco-friendly environment in many countries worldwide. Due to the rise in electrical demand, consumption, and greenhouse gas levels, there is great potential that the total demand would be met by PV systems in some appropriate conditions, hence, operating the power distribution network with a 100% PV penetration scenario. Thus, it is a topic with great interest to most researchers and power system operators to analyze the effects of 100% PV penetration on distribution systems. This paper is focused on steady-state analysis and harmonics at full load conditions with 100% PV penetration. The simulation results of this paper have demonstrated the level of suitability of 100% PV penetration on distribution systems. The results of this paper are concerned with the effects of 100% PV penetration on the voltage level, the losses, the reverse power flow, and the harmonics level in the system. Although it is a target to increase the share of PVs in future scenarios, the analysis results show that it is worthwhile to consider the negative impacts associated with it. These negative impacts might include the violation of voltage limits, reverse power flow into the system, and harmonic order levels, especially at low load conditions. The simulations are performed in DIgSILENT Power Factory, where a modified version of the IEEE 13- node test system is used to demonstrate the findings of this paper.

This paper introduces a study of utilizing solar energy farm that is integrated with the national grid based on intensive data availability of solar energy in Jordan. The study discusses the impact and the ability of integrating solar farms into the national grid of Jordan. The study considerd different cases and, various power system studies for connection points of solar farms to medium voltage networks. Among these studies are short circuit level, voltage profile and power losses. The main objective of the study is to analyze impacts of integration of solar farms on distribution systems of the chosen areas. Photovoltaic (PV) system with varying penetration levels are integrated at different locations (connection points) into the distribution network. Calculations are performed and models are built using actual data obtained from the Jordanian power grid with PV interconnection. The effect of the short circuit level, voltage profile and power losses in the distribution system are also analyzed. Finally, the most suitable method of connecting the solar farm to the national power network is recommended.
