TL;DR: The major implication of this review is that relocation be examined from an ecological perspective, which takes into account both the subjective and objective features of the old and new environments.
Abstract: Research on the effects of involuntary residential relocation on the personal adjustment of individuals is examined. These relocations include institutional transfers, job transfers, and urban renewal projects. The research indicates that although such relocations frequently result in physical and emotional stress reactions, these effects are stronger for some groups and occur only under certain circumstances. The variability in personal reactions to relocation is explained in terms of three types of approaches: the first emphasizes stable individual characteristics; the second, cognitive mediators; and the third, environmental characteristics. The major implication of this review is that relocation be examined from an ecological perspective, which takes into account both the subjective and objective features of the old and new environments.

TL;DR: Relocation resulted in short-term decrements in positive behavior and in deterioration in health for all the groups and high staff disruption produced a short- term increase in abnormal behavior.
Abstract: Effects of relocation on 50 severely and profoundly mentally retarded and physically disabled children transferred from two facilities into a third one were examined. Social disruption, which referred to changes in daytime staff and programming, was manipulated 3 weeks after the move; the health and personal adjustment were measured prior to and 1 to 3 weeks, 4 to 6 weeks, and 11 to 13 weeks after the move. Relocation resulted in short-term decrements in positive behavior and in deterioration in health for all the groups. High staff disruption produced a short-term increase in abnormal behavior.
