An international monitoring system for verification to support both the treaty on the prohibition of nuclear weapons and the nonproliferation treaty

TL;DR: The Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons calls for states to meet regularly to consider measures for the verified, time-bound and irreversible elimination of nuclear weapon programs as discussed by the authors, which is the basis for our work.

A new START model for transparency in nuclear disarmament

Abstract: The action plan adopted at the 2010 Non-Proliferation Treaty Review Conference encouraged the nuclear‐weapon states to agree on a reporting standard that would help demonstrate progress in their commitment to pursue reductions of nuclear arsenals. This study presents a model for such reporting, based on the approach developed by the Russian Federation and the United States in the New START treaty. As the study demonstrates, the framework of the US–Russian nuclear disarmament process could serve as the foundation for a multilateral transparency and accountability regime, and provide a basis for closer cooperation and conf idence-building measures among all NPT member states to help advance the goal of nuclear disarmament.
Journal ArticleDOI

Combining Satellite Imagery and 3D Drawing Tools for Nonproliferation Analysis: A Case Study of Pakistan's Khushab Plutonium Production Reactors

TL;DR: In this article, the authors used the horizontal cross-sectional area of the Khushab reactors' mechanical draft cooling towers to estimate the thermal capacity of each reactor and set an upper bound for the reactors' abilities to produce plutonium.
Journal ArticleDOI

Deferred verification: the role of new verification technologies and approaches

TL;DR: The authors proposed a new approach to nuclear-arms-control verification, dubbed "deferred verification", which forgoes inspections at sensitive nuclear sites and of nuclear facilities and does not require the authorisation of nuclear sites.
