The emergence of additive manufacturing and 3D printing technologies is introducing industrial skills deficits and opportunities for new teaching practices in a range of subjects and educational settings. In response, research investigating these practices is emerging across a wide range of education disciplines, but often without reference to studies in other disciplines. Responding to this problem, this article synthesizes these dispersed bodies of research to provide a state-of-the-art literature review of where and how 3D printing is being used in the education system. Through investigating the application of 3D printing in schools, universities, libraries and special education settings, six use categories are identified and described: (1) to teach students about 3D printing; (2) to teach educators about 3D printing; (3) as a support technology during teaching; (4) to produce artefacts that aid learning; (5) to create assistive technologies; and (6) to support outreach activities. Although evidence can be found of 3D printing-based teaching practices in each of these six categories, implementation remains immature, and recommendations are made for future research and education policy.

Invited review article: Where and how 3D printing is used in teaching and education

The aim of this paper is to evaluate the use of three-dimensional (3D)
scanning technologies for design and engineering courses. This paper will provide a
comparative discussion of the current 3D scanning technologies; and then describes three
experimental studies in engineering, transport design and fashion design. Using 3D scanner
technology the experiments tested the transferral of a variety of different data from scanned
organic 3D shapes to 3D CAD packages for learning and teaching in undergraduate education.

A comparative study of 3D scanning in engineering, product and transport design and fashion design education

School of Art, Design & Architecture academics Dr. Ertu Unver and Andrew Taylor were invited by Chris Wilkinson President of the Textiles Society, as guest speakers at the Society's lecture event, held at the Textile Centre of Excellence, in Huddersfield UK on Monday 17th February 2014. 
Around 60 Delegates from local industries in design, manufacturing, craft, engineering, product, architecture were in attendance for the dinner, exhibition and lecture titled: 
3D Printing- Media Hype or Manufacturing Reality: Textiles Surface Fashion Product Architecture.
A exhibition of 3D printed objects; manufacturing parts, art and design products were curated by Unver and Taylor from over 10 years of 3D R&D printing projects in the School of Art, Design & Architecture.

Despite digital 3-D polygon modelling applications providing a common and powerful tool-set for archaeological, architectural and historical visualisation over recent years, the relatively recent developments in high-resolution sculpting software allow for the possibility to create digital outcomes with a degree of surface fidelity not previously obtainable from the more widely used poly-modelling software packages. Such digital sculpting applications are more commonly applied within the video games and TV/motion picture industries, the intention of this paper is to show how such tools and methodologies together with existing scanned data and some historical knowledge can remediate and re-imagine lost sculptural form. The intended research will focus on an examination and partial re-construction of the tomb of Sir John Neville, 3rd Baron Raby located at Durham Cathedral, County Durham UK.

New Approach to Introduction of 3D Digital Technologies in Design Education

Advanced 3D Laser Scanning processes have developed over the last decade and are now available and affordable for medium to large companies as well as education. This study examines the overall efficiency of the 3D scanning process and potential value for use in design education. The potential effectiveness of the 3D laser technology for education is also assessed with live projects. This article explores a reverse engineering approach for product form design. Three-dimensional models of design concepts are created in clay, and data points on the surface of the model are then measured using a non-contact 3D scan device. The resulting data is then imported into an appropriate CAD design package for further design development.
