In this paper, the viscous continuum traffic flow model for a single lane is extended to the traffic flow for two-lane freeways. The proposed model is a higher-order continuum model considering the coupling and lane changing effects of the vehicles on two adjacent lanes. It results from integrating the Taylor series expansion of the viscous continuum traffic flow model proposed by Ge (2006 Physica A 371 667) into the multi-lane model presented by Daganzo (1997 Transpn. Res. B 31 83). Our proposed model may be used to describe non-anisotropic behaviour because of lane changing in multi-lane traffic. A linear stability analysis is given and the neutral stability condition is obtained. Also, issues related to lane changing, shock waves and rarefaction waves, local clustering and phase transition are investigated through a simulation experiment. The simulation results show that the proposed model is capable of explaining some particular traffic phenomena commonly observable in real world traffic flow.

A viscous continuum traffic flow model with consideration of the coupling effect for two-lane freeways

Considering the effects that the probability of traffic interruption and the friction between two lanes have on the car-following behaviour, this paper establishes a new two-lane microscopic car-following model. Based on this microscopic model, a new macroscopic model was deduced by the relevance relation of microscopic and macroscopic scale parameters for the two-lane traffic flow. Terms related to lane change are added into the continuity equations and velocity dynamic equations to investigate the lane change rate. Numerical results verify that the proposed model can be efficiently used to reflect the effect of the probability of traffic interruption on the shock, rarefaction wave and lane change behaviour on two-lane freeways. The model has also been applied in reproducing some complex traffic phenomena caused by traffic accident interruption.

Continuum modeling for two-lane traffic flow with consideration of the traffic interruption probability

This paper introduces a new two-lane high-order continuum model by embedding the two delay time scales continuum traffic model presented by Xue (2003 Phys. Rev. E 68 066123) into the multi-lane model proposed by Daganzo (1997 Transpn. Res. B 31 83) with the consideration of the coupling effect between the vehicles of two lanes in instantaneous traffic situation and lane-change effect. In the novel model, the coupling effect of two lanes and phenomena of lane change, which were not discussed in Daganzo's model and Xue's model, are taken into account. Numerical simulation shows that it is in accordance with real traffic flow. This obviously indicates that the new phenomenon and behaviour are analogous results as single lane presented by Xue, and the proposed model is more reasonable on two lanes. Furthermore, the generation rate between two lanes is also investigated. The results show that the formation and diffusion of traffic shock wave can be better simulated on two lanes.

A new traffic model with the consideration of coupling effect with two lanes

There are many methods to construct kernel with given data attribute information. Gaussian radial basis function (RBF) kernel is one of the most popular ways to construct a kernel. The key observation is that in real-world data, besides the data attribute information, data label information also exists, which indicates the data class. In order to make use of both data attribute information and data label information, in this work, we propose a supervised kernel construction method. Supervised information from training data is integrated into standard kernel construction process to improve the discriminative property of resulting kernel. On supervised graph Laplacian embedding CA model & kernel construction and its application

Simulation of traffic flow is a complicated system engineering that is influenced by multitudinous factors. A four-direction traffic flow model have been put forward considering parameters of acceleration and probability of lanes changing impacting on traffic flow. On that basis, stability of traffic flow was analyzed. Finally, two-dimensional cellular road model in symmetrical type have been carried out to simulate in order to testify validity and applicability, and Origin 6.1was applied to analyze effect of probability of lane changing and acceleration on traffic flow under open boundary conditions. The results show that traffic flow and lane changing probability fluctuates, traffic flow of exit is 2.49 0.1, traffic flow of entrance is 2.2 0.1, traffic flow of exit and entrance keep value area of 1.8 0.1.

Simulation on Influencing of Lane Changing Probability on Traffic Flow Base on Cellular Automata

In this paper we investigate the two-lane main road on-ramp system with signal-controlling using the cellular automata traffic flow model. The traffic signal is setup at the merging part between the main road and the on-ramp so that it can control the vehicles of both roads. We simulate the effect of traffic signal on vehicle flows of main road and on-ramp, and the traffic capacity and average velocity at the merging part are discussed. Through the analysis of the phase diagram, it can be found that the on-ramp system with two-lane main road can embody more complicated and realistic traffic flow characteristics than the on-ramp system with single-lane main road. Compared with the model introduced by Jiang Rui ［Jiang R 2003 J. Phys. A 36 11713］, the simulation results indicate that the state of traffic flow is improved obviously and the capacity of the on ramp system has increased.
