Polymer microcapsules by interfacial polyaddition between styrene-maleic anhydride copolymers and amines

A new chelating polymer sorbent was synthesized through the copolymerization of styrene and maleic anhydride in the presence of divinyl benzene as the crosslinking agent, followed by hydrolysis. This polymeric resin, bearing O donor groups, had the advantage of being stable in basic and saline media, unlike its linear analogue. This newly developed chelating matrix has a high resin capacity for metal ions such as Cr, Fe, Ni, Cu, and Pb. Various physicochemical parameters, such as the pH, volume, and flow rate, and the interference effect on metal uptake were studied. The sorption capacities of the crosslinked resin for Cr(III), Fe(III), Ni(II), Cu(II), and Pb(II) were 10.2, 14.3, 14.2, 15.4, and 8.8 mg/g, respectively. A high recovery of 98% was obtained for all the metal ions with 2N HCl as the eluting agent. The chelating resin was characterized by swelling studies, Fourier transform infrared, elemental analysis, X-ray studies, and thermal analysis. Synthesis and analytical application of a chelating resin based on a crosslinked styrene/maleic acid copolymer for the extraction of trace-metal ions

The dilute solution properties of maleic anhydride and maleic acid copolymers: 1. Light scattering, osmotic pressure and viscosity measurements

Styrene–maleic anhydride copolymers have been successfully synthesized using catalytic chain transfer polymerization employing the low spin [bis(difluoroboryl)dimethylglyoximato]cobalt(II) (COBF) complex. By partially replacing styrene with α-methylstyrene (while maintaining the amount of maleic anhydride at 50 mol %) over a range of ratios, it was shown that the rate of reaction and molar mass decreases with increasing α-methylstyrene content. The polymers were characterized using MALDI–ToF–MS and 1H–13C gHMQC NMR to determine the end groups, which in the presence of α-methylstyrene was an α-methylstyrene unit with a vinylic functionality. For styrene–maleic anhydride copolymers, the end group was determined to be predominantly maleic anhydride with a vinylic functionality. End-Functional Styrene−Maleic Anhydride Copolymers via Catalytic Chain Transfer Polymerization

Styrene and maleic anhydride were copolymerized in benzene. The whole polymer thus obtained was fractionated with acetone and petroleum ether as the solvent and precipitant, respectively. The viscosities and osmotic pressures of the fractions were determined in tetrahydrofuran. The relation between the intrinsic viscosity and the molecular weight, [η] = 5.07 × 10−5 Mn0.81, was obtained in tetrahydrofuran. The unperturbed mean square end-to-end distance was estimated by the Stockmayer-Fixman equation. A theoretical equation for the mean square end-to-end distance for a chain of repeating units of different bond lengths a and b with a fixed valence angle θ and without restriction of internal rotation was presented and applied to this copolymer. In addition, the equation of the mean-square end-to-end distance derived by Wall for trans-polyisoprene without rotational restriction was modified for application to this copolymer. The result evaluated with our equation was about 26% smaller than that from the modified Wall equation. A steric parameter for the present copolymer is defined and discussed in comparison with those of polystyrenesulfone and polystyrene.
