An embodiment of a power supply includes an input node operable to receive an input voltage, an output node operable to provide a regulated output voltage, an odd number of magnetically coupled phase paths each coupled between the input and output nodes, and a first magnetically uncoupled phase path coupled between the input and output nodes. Such a power supply may improve its efficiency by activating different combinations of the coupled and uncoupled phase paths depending on the load conditions. For example, the power supply may activate only an uncoupled phase path during light-load conditions, may activate only coupled phase paths during moderate-load conditions, and may activate both coupled and uncoupled phase paths during heavy-load conditions and during a step-up load transient.

An inductor element is formed in a multiple layer lead structure including a lead, an insulative layer that insulates leads above and below, and a via provided in the insulative layer and connecting leads above and below wherein lead layers are multiply laminated layers, characterized in that: at least a portion of at least a pair of vertically adjacent leads are coiled leads; the coiled leads are connected in series, wherein current directions of vertically adjacent coiled leads are the same by a via provided on an end portion thereof, and form a serial inductance; and an inter-lead capacitance of the vertically adjacent coiled leads is larger than an inter-lead capacitance between other coiled leads formed in the same lead layer.

The body has a top surface with a cavity thereon, the first conductive element is disposed in the cavity, and the second conductive element is disposed in the body. The first external electrode electrically connected to the first conductive element and the second external electrode electrically connected to the second conductive element are both disposed on the top surface of the body or a first surface formed by the top surface of the encapsulation compound and the exposed portions of the top surface of the body which are not covered by the encapsulation compound.

An embodiment of a power-supply module includes a molded package, power-supply components disposed within the package, and an inductor disposed within the package and over the power-supply components. For example, for a given output-power rating, such a power-supply module may be smaller, more efficient, and more reliable than, and may run cooler than, a power-supply module having the inductor mounted outside of the package or side-by-side with other components. And for a given size, such a module may have a higher output-power rating than a module having the inductor mounted outside of the package or side-by-side with other components.

Semiconductor packages including magnetic core inductor (MCI) structures for integrated voltage regulators are described. In an example, a semiconductor package includes a package substrate and a semiconductor die coupled to a first surface of the package substrate. The semiconductor die has a first plurality of metal-insulator-metal (MIM) capacitor layers thereon. The semiconductor package also includes a magnetic core inductor (MCI) die coupled to a second surface of the package substrate. The MCI die includes one or more slotted inductors and has a second plurality of MIM capacitor layers thereon.

A surface-mount microconverter is formed by mounting a microinductor chip and a semiconductor integrated circuit chip on a circuit board. Stud terminals are arranged on the circuit board and the microinductor chip is supported on the stud terminals, and the microinductor chip and the semiconductor integrated circuit chip are superposed on the circuit board. The microconverter has an improved ability and is small and thin. The microconverter includes an effective laminated magnetic-core inductor. The inductor comprises a helical coil formed by uniting alternately superposed insulating magnetic layers and conductive pattern layers, and an annular closed magnetic path formed by the insulating magnetic layers and defining a magnetic field created by the coil. The inductor can be miniaturized in a thin chip, and a wide range in which magnetic flux density varies linearly can be secured by balancing a closed magnetic path for a magnetic field created by the coil.
