Exploring the Meanings of Making Traditional Arts and Crafts among Older Women in Crete, Using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to offer a theoretical framework for the analysis of the eventual implications of Greek Orthodoxy for business and entrepreneurial activities in general.Design/methodology/approach – The paper examines the basic concepts, tenets and principles – in particular, those being of interest to business and entrepreneurship – of a specific religious worldview, Greek Orthodoxy. It then applies these religious norms to value‐based entrepreneurial pursuits and assesses their potential impact on entrepreneurial motivation and action. Particular emphasis is given to the societal relevance of this comprehensive worldview. The impact of Greek Orthodoxy on entrepreneurship: a theoretical framework

Research about masculinities in schools often focuses on hegemonic masculinity. This can have the effect of reinforcing the privilege associated with hegemonic masculinity, as well as overlooking differences amongst boys and the plural practices individual boys engage in. Drawing on empirical research in two South Australian primary schools with students aged 6–7 and 11–13, this article examines the complex ways in which boys engaged in plural gender practices. Practices differing from a discourse of (local) hegemonic masculinity related to three key themes: displaying ‘intelligence’ and being studious; involvement in traditionally ‘feminine’ activities; and being caring, loving family and friends, and engaging in cross-gender friendships. This article utilises these themes to argue that practices could work alongside or present challenges to practices relating to a discourse of hegemonic masculinity. COLLUDING WITH OR CHALLENGING HEGEMONIC MASCULINITY?: Examining Primary School Boys' Plural Gender Practices

Background: In the past, Greek drug-affected families had predominantly been conceptualized as one of the main causes of drug problems. This study explored the ways drug-affected families respond to, and cope with, a relative’s drug problem by examining the perceptions of both Greek drug users and drug-affected families.Method: A qualitative study comprised of semi-structured in-depth interviews was conducted in two state drug agencies in Thessaloniki, Greece. A total of 40 adult problem drug-using men and women and eight parents of problem drug users were asked to reflect on the ways families respond to, and cope with, drug use. The method of data analysis involved a manual systematic identification of themes in participant narratives in line with analytic induction principles.Results: After discovery of the drug problem, all families were reported as coping with their adult children’s drug problems in ways consistent with the stress-strain-coping-support model. Family solidarity in the face of stress: responses to drug use problems in Greece

Family has a long historical course in Greece. The turbulent periods of Hellenic history and the fluctuations of the political, social and economic life have influenced Hellenic family strengths. Nevertheless, there have been some basic elements on which the family has been based and acquired a continuous stability and homogeneity. These features are: religion, language, a rich cultural heritage, tradition and customs. Roles in the family are strongly influenced by the above, though they have been readjusted and redefined in contemporary society.

The family strengths in Greece then and now

Bereavement and grief are universal phenomena but they are conceptualized differently according to the culture and society. This chapter begins with a discussion of the perception of death in classical Greece, dating back to the eighth century bc. This is followed by a look at how thinking changed during the transition to Christianity. The Greeks have suffered numerous losses in their long and turbulent history, and so the chapter continues with a focus on important historical implications of loss in Greek culture. This is followed by a presentation on bereavement in contemporary Greece and how loss is expressed among Greeks today. The chapter concludes with a mother telling the story of her young son’s death from cancer, and a daughter telling how she endures the loss of her mother, who died in a car crash many years ago.
