This paper focuses on the use of satellite communication systems for the support of Internet of Things (IoT). We refer to the IoT paradigm as the means to collect data from sensors or RFID and to send control messages to actuators. In many application scenarios, sensors and actuators are distributed over a very wide area; in some cases, they are located in remote areas where they are not served by terrestrial access networks and, as a consequence, the use of satellite communication systems becomes of paramount importance for the Internet of Remote Things (IoRT). The enabling factors of IoRT through satellite are: 1) the interoperability between satellite systems and sensors/actuators and 2) the support of IPv6 over satellite. Furthermore, radio resource management algorithms are required to enhance the efficiency of IoT over satellite. In this work, we provide an integrated view of satellite-based IoT, handling this topic as a jigsaw puzzle where the pieces to be assembled are represented by the following topics: MAC protocols for satellite routed sensor networks, efficient IPv6 support, heterogeneous networks interoperability, quality of service (QoS) management, and group-based communications.

Satellite Communications Supporting Internet of Remote Things

Traffic engineering is an important mechanism for Internet network providers seeking to optimize network performance and traffic delivery. Routing optimization plays a key role in traffic engineering, finding efficient routes so as to achieve the desired network performance. In this survey we review Internet traffic engineering from the perspective of routing optimization. A taxonomy of routing algorithms in the literature is provided, dating from the advent of the TE concept in the late 1990s. We classify the algorithms into multiple dimensions: unicast/multicast, intra-/inter- domain, IP-/MPLS-based and offline/online TE schemes. In addition, we investigate some important traffic engineering issues, including robustness, TE interactions, and interoperability with overlay selfish routing. In addition to a review of existing solutions, we also point out some challenges in TE operation and important issues that are worthy of investigation in future research activities.

An overview of routing optimization for internet traffic engineering

Assuring end-to-end service quality in a multi- provider Ethernet environment is a challenging task. Operation and maintenance issues have become more and more complex due to the gradual extension of the Ethernet technology from local- to wide-area networks and the increasingly frequent use of layer-2 virtual private networks. End-to-end Ethernet network management is currently under standardization, with a focus on connectivity fault management and performance management. However, none of the tools and research prototypes available to date integrate service-level monitoring with fault management functions such as event correlation or root cause analysis for interconnected Ethernet networks. In this paper, we address the issue by proposing an integrated service-level monitoring and fault management framework. Our event processing module can handle various events generated by network nodes or pollers. We also describe service-level monitoring and fault management methods that are fine-tuned for managing end-to-end multi- provider Ethernet services.
