An alternating current generator for supplying the electrical loads on a motor vehicle. The generator has a stator core that carries a three-phase stator or output winding. The rotor of the generator has two claw pole members that are so oriented that the fingers of the pole members are aligned. Disposed between the two pole members is a third pole member having projections disposed between the aligned fingers of the claw pole members. The rotor has two field coils which are so arranged and energized that the magnetic polarity of the two claw pole members is the same and opposite the magnetic polarity of the third pole member. One of the field coils can be replaced by a permanent magnet and when this is done the generator is provided with a magnetic circuit that can divert permanent magnet flux away from the stator core. Flux diversion is controlled by supplying unidirectional current to the field winding under the control of a voltage regulator.

Alternating current generator

A vehicular electric power system is composed of a rotating AC machine having polyphase armature coils, a full-wave rectifier for rectifying the generated voltages by a plurality of SiC-MOSFETs to give a rectified output to the battery unit, and a control device for selectively turning on the plurality of SiC-MOSFETs to raise the generated voltages by short-circuiting and open-circuiting the armature coils on the basis of the phases of voltages generated by the rotating AC machine at a predetermined duty factor.

Vehicular electric power system

A motor wheel apparatus having an integral reduction planetary gearset is steerable and adapted for use in a conventional independently sprung automotive suspension. The motor, gearset and wheel elements are mounted on a single steerable support member to minimize the tolerance stack up and to enable independent servicing of the motor and gearset elements. The output element of the gearset is supported solely by virtue of the gear meshes and a splined connection to the wheel, thereby permitting the output element to self-align with the wheel and isolating the wheel forces from the motor and gearset elements.

Independently suspended steerable motor wheel apparatus

A voltage V B of a battery (16) is compared with a predetermined value V max (100) and when the battery voltage V B is lower than the predetermined value V max as a result of the comparison, a state of charge (SOC) of the battery (16) is discriminated (104). In the case of an SOC of at least 70%, an output P G of a generator (18) is controlled on the basis of an output P M of a motor (10) (106 - 116), and in the case of an SOC of less than 70%, while the output P G of the generator (18) is controlled to a relatively high value a , the output P M of the motor (10) is limited (120). When the SOC is restored to more than 75%, steps on and after 106 are executed. When the battery voltage V B is at least the predetermined value V max , an idle control of an engine (22) is carried out (124). As a result, the SOC of the battery (16) can be ensured and overcharging of the battery (16) can be prevented.

Generator controller and controlling method for hybrid vehicle

Four rotating magnets, driven by the engine, induce in two or more windings a charging pulse, a discharging pulse, and a control pulse, the latter pulse in certain embodiments being identical with the charging pulse. The control pulse, the value of which is engine rpm-dependent, causes a normally open circuit shunting the ignition capacitor to close when the engine rpm exceeds the permissible maximum, thereby discharging the ignition capacitor and preventing it from furnishing electrical energy to the spark coil. In this way, the engine rpm is limited to safe values.

Ignition arrangement for internal combustion engines

A voltage regulator for regulating the output voltage of a diode-rectified alternating current generator that supplies the electrical loads on a motor vehicle including the storage battery. The voltage regulator has an up-down counter which is incremented when the output voltage of the generator is below a desired regulated value and is decremented when the output voltage of the generator is above the desired regulating value. The magnitude of the count in the counter is repeatedly sampled and used to determine the on time of a semiconductor switch that is connected in series with the field winding to thereby control the duty cycle of the field voltage pulses. The counter is incremented at a lower rate when the speed of the engine that drives the generator is below a predetermined speed than it is when the speed of the engine is above the predetermined speed. When the generator is not rotating, the up-count of the counter is limited to a predetermined value that provides a minimum field voltage duty cycle. The system is capable of sensing either battery voltage or rectifier output voltage and is controlled to automatically switch between battery voltage and rectifier voltage under certain operating conditions.

Generator voltage regulating system

A voltage regulating system for a generator that supplies the battery and electrical loads on a motor vehicle The system includes a load response control for detecting whenever a substantial electrical load is applied to the generator tending to cause a drop in generator output voltage and when such a condition is detected field current is controlled to gradually increase field current from some value The load response control includes means for storing an electrical signal that corresponds to generator field current and for utilizing this stored value to set generator field current at a value corresponding to a field current that occurred just prior to the detected drop in voltage and then increasing field current slowly from this value The system includes means for preventing a subsequent drop in detected load voltage from actuating the load response control for the time duration that field current is being slowly increased by the load response control once it has been triggered by an initial drop in voltage

Power is supplied to the system from fuel cells 29 or alternatively solar cells or a battery may be used. It is stated that the system could also be used with a gas turbine vehicle.
