Mitigation and Adaptation Strategies for Global Change

. Climate, land use, and other anthropogenic and natural drivers have the potential to influence fire dynamics in many regions. To develop a mechanistic understanding of the changing role of these drivers and their impact on atmospheric composition, long-term fire records are needed that fuse information from different satellite and in situ data streams. Here we describe the fourth version of the Global Fire Emissions Database (GFED) and quantify global fire emissions patterns during 1997–2016. The modeling system, based on the Carnegie–Ames–Stanford Approach (CASA) biogeochemical model, has several modifications from the previous version and uses higher quality input datasets. Significant upgrades include (1) new burned area estimates with contributions from small fires, (2) a revised fuel consumption parameterization optimized using field observations, (3) modifications that improve the representation of fuel consumption in frequently burning landscapes, and (4) fire severity estimates that better represent continental differences in burning processes across boreal regions of North America and Eurasia. The new version has a higher spatial resolution (0.25°) and uses a different set of emission factors that separately resolves trace gas and aerosol emissions from temperate and boreal forest ecosystems. Global mean carbon emissions using the burned area dataset with small fires (GFED4s) were 2.2  ×  1015 grams of carbon per year (Pg C yr−1) during 1997–2016, with a maximum in 1997 (3.0 Pg C yr−1) and minimum in 2013 (1.8 Pg C yr−1). These estimates were 11 % higher than our previous estimates (GFED3) during 1997–2011, when the two datasets overlapped. This net increase was the result of a substantial increase in burned area (37 %), mostly due to the inclusion of small fires, and a modest decrease in mean fuel consumption (−19 %) to better match estimates from field studies, primarily in savannas and grasslands. For trace gas and aerosol emissions, differences between GFED4s and GFED3 were often larger due to the use of revised emission factors. If small fire burned area was excluded (GFED4 without the s for small fires), average emissions were 1.5 Pg C yr−1. The addition of small fires had the largest impact on emissions in temperate North America, Central America, Europe, and temperate Asia. This small fire layer carries substantial uncertainties; improving these estimates will require use of new burned area products derived from high-resolution satellite imagery. Our revised dataset provides an internally consistent set of burned area and emissions that may contribute to a better understanding of multi-decadal changes in fire dynamics and their impact on the Earth system. The current meta-analysis investigated the extent to which personality traits changed as a result of intervention, with the primary focus on clinical interventions. We identified 207 studies that had tracked changes in measures of personality traits during interventions, including true experiments and prepost change designs. Interventions were associated with marked changes in personality trait measures over an average time of 24 weeks (e.g., d = .37). Additional analyses showed that the increases replicated across experimental and nonexperimental designs, for nonclinical interventions, and persisted in longitudinal follow-ups of samples beyond the course of intervention. Emotional stability was the primary trait domain showing changes as a result of therapy, followed by extraversion. The type of therapy employed was not strongly associated with the amount of change in personality traits. Patients presenting with anxiety disorders changed the most, and patients being treated for substance use changed the least. The relevance of the results for theory and social policy are discussed. A systematic review of personality trait change through intervention.

This paper describes a meta-analysis of 33 studies that examined the relationship between the Five-Factor Model and symptoms of clinical disorders. The typical pattern found associated with clinical disorders or measures of clinical disorders was high Neuroticism, low Conscientiousness, low Agreeableness, and low Extraversion. Comparisons of diagnostic groups and norm groups showed higher levels of Neuroticism and lower levels of Extraversion than did studies of correlations between measures of the level of a disorder and measures of the five factors. Studies of observer ratings of the five factors showed lower levels of Neuroticism and Openness than did studies of self-report ratings. These and other findings relating to type of scale and type of comparison group have possible clinical implications and raise several questions worthy of further research.

Emissions estimation from satellite retrievals: A review of current capability

Tropical peat swamp forests hold about 15&#8211;19% of the global organic carbon (C) pool of which 77% is found in Southeast Asia. Nonetheless, these ecosystems have been drained, exploited for timber and land for agriculture, leading to frequent fires in the region. Fire alters the physico-chemical characteristics of peat as well as the hydrology, which may convert these ecosystems into a source of C for decades as C emissions to the atmosphere exceeds photosynthesis.To understand the long-term impacts of fire on C cycling, we investigated C emissions in intact and degraded PSFs in Brunei Darussalam, which has experienced 7 fires over the last 40 years. We quantified the magnitude and patterns of C loss (CO2, CH4, and Dissolved Organic carbon) and soil-water quality characteristics along with continuous monitoring of soil temperature and water table level from June 2017 to January 2019. To investigate the age and sources of C contributing to ecosystem respiration (Reco) and CH4, we used natural tracers such as 14C.We observed a major difference in the physico-chemical parameters, which in turn affected C dynamics, especially CH4. In burnt areas (7.8&#177;2.2 mg CH4 m-2 hr-1) the CH4 emission was approximately twice compared to the intact peat swamp forest (4.0&#177;2.0 mg CH4 m-2 hr-1) due to prolonged higher water table creating optimum methanogenesis conditions. On the contrary, Reco did not show a significant difference between burnt (432&#177;83 mg CO2 m-2 hr-1) and intact areas (359&#177;76 mg CO2 m-2 hr-1). Further, radiocarbon (14C) analysis showed an overall modern signature for both CO2 and CH4 fluxes implying a microbial preference for the more labile C fraction in solution.With frequent fires and more flooding in the future, these degraded tropical peat swamp forests areas may remain a hot spot of C emissions as suggested by our findings.

Abstract This study quantified CO2 emissions from tropical peat swamp soils in Brunei Darussalam. At each site, soil was collected from areas of intact and degraded peat and CO2 flux, and total organic content were measured ex situ. Soil organic content (~20–99%) was not significantly different between intact and degraded forest samples. CO2 flux was higher for intact forest samples than degraded forest samples (~1.0 vs. ~0.6 μmol CO2 m−2 s−1, respectively) but did not differ among forest locations. From our laboratory experiments, we estimated a potential emissions of ~10–20 t CO2 ha−1 y−1 which is in the lower range of values reported for other tropical peat swamps. However, our results are likely affected by unmeasured variation in root respiration and the lability of resident carbon. Overall, these findings provide experimental evidence to support that clearance of tropical peat swamp forests can increase CO2 emissions due to faster rates of decomposition.
