Functionalization of Graphene: Covalent and Non-Covalent Approaches, Derivatives and Applications

Graphene, a single layer of graphite, possesses a unique two-dimensional structure, high conductivity, superior electron mobility and extremely high specific surface area, and can be produced on a large scale at low cost. Thus, it has been regarded as an important component for making various functional composite materials. Especially, graphene-based semiconductor photocatalysts have attracted extensive attention because of their usefulness in environmental and energy applications. This critical review summarizes the recent progress in the design and fabrication of graphene-based semiconductor photocatalysts via various strategies including in situ growth, solution mixing, hydrothermal and/or solvothermal methods. Furthermore, the photocatalytic properties of the resulting graphene-based composite systems are also discussed in relation to the environmental and energy applications such as photocatalytic degradation of pollutants, photocatalytic hydrogen generation and photocatalytic disinfection. This critical review ends with a summary and some perspectives on the challenges and new directions in this emerging area of research (158 references).

Graphene-based semiconductor photocatalysts

Graphene and graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) composite photocatalysts were prepared by a combined impregnation−chemical reduction strategy involving polymerization of melamine in the presence of graphene oxide (precursors) and hydrazine hydrate (reducing agent), followed by thermal treatment at 550 °C under flowing nitrogen. The resulting graphene/g-C3N4 composite photocatalysts were characterized by X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, UV−visible spectrophotometry, nitrogen adsorption, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and photoluminescence spectroscopy. The transient photocurrent response was measured for several on−off cycles of intermittent irradiation. The effect of graphene content on the rate of visible-light photocatalytic hydrogen production was studied for a series of graphene−graphitic carbon nitride composite samples containing Pt as a cocatalyst in methanol aqueous solutions. Graphene-based materials are gaining heightened attention as novel materials for environmental applications The unique physicochemical properties of graphene, notably its exceptionally high surface area, electron mobility, thermal conductivity, and mechanical strength, can lead to novel or improved technologies to address the pressing global environmental challenges This critical review assesses the recent developments in the use of graphene-based materials as sorbent or photocatalytic materials for environmental decontamination, as building blocks for next generation water treatment and desalination membranes, and as electrode materials for contaminant monitoring or removal The most promising areas of research are highlighted, with a discussion of the main challenges that we need to overcome in order to fully realize the exceptional properties of graphene in environmental applications

Carbonaceous nanomaterials for the enhancement of TiO2 photocatalysis

In this work, the synthesis and physiochemical characterization of titanium oxide nanoparticle−graphene oxide (TiO2−GO) and titanium oxide nanoparticle−reduced graphene oxide (TiO2−RGO) composites was undertaken. TiO2−GO materials were prepared via the hydrolysis of TiF4 at 60 °C for 24 h in the presence of an aqueous dispersion of graphene oxide (GO). The reaction proceeded to yield an insoluble material that is composed of TiO2 and GO. Composites were characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM), Raman spectroscopy, N2 adsorption−desorption, and thermal gravimetric analysis/differential thermal analysis (TGA/DTA). This approach yielded highly faceted anatase nanocrystals with petal-like morphologies on and embedded between the graphene sheets.
