Engineering Optimization : Theory and Practice

An outer-approximation algorithm is presented for solving mixed-integer nonlinear programming problems of a particular class. Linearity of the integer (or discrete) variables, and convexity of the nonlinear functions involving continuous variables are the main features in the underlying mathematical structure. Based on principles of decomposition, outer-approximation and relaxation, the proposed algorithm effectively exploits the structure of the problems, and consists of solving an alternating finite sequence of nonlinear programming subproblems and relaxed versions of a mixed-integer linear master program. Convergence and optimality properties of the algorithm are presented, as well as a general discussion on its implementation. Numerical results are reported for several example problems to illustrate the potential of the proposed algorithm for programs in the class addressed in this paper. Finally, a theoretical comparison with generalized Benders decomposition is presented on the lower bounds predicted by the relaxed master programs.

We investigate the convex–concave procedure, a local heuristic that utilizes the tools of convex optimization to find local optima of difference of convex (DC) programming problems. The class of DC problems includes many difficult problems such as the traveling salesman problem. We extend the standard procedure in two major ways and describe several variations. First, we allow for the algorithm to be initialized without a feasible point. Second, we generalize the algorithm to include vector inequalities. We then present several examples to demonstrate these algorithms.

Variations and extension of the convex–concave procedure

An algorithm is developed for solving the convex programming problem which iteratively proceeds to the optimum by constructing a cutting plane through the center of a polyhedral approximation to the optimum. This generates a sequence of primal feasible points whose limit points satisfy the Kuhn—Tucker conditions of the problem. Additionally, we present a simple, effective rule for dropping prior cuts, an easily calculated bound on the objective function, and a rate of convergence.

The Central Cutting Plane Algorithm is an algorithm for solving the convex programming problem. Its convergence and other properties have been established elsewhere [2,6]; here, we will state, but not prove, the major theoretical results concerning the algorithm. The purpose of this presentation is to report some preliminary computation al experience with an experimental code of the algorithm.
