Abstract: , 611, May 2007 31In this article, the authors analyze the field of culturalconsumption in the United States. Using the 2000DDB Lifestyle Study, they examine a cross-section ofAmericans in terms of their occupational categories, media usage, consumption practices, social behaviors, and indicators of civic and political engagement. Indoing so, the authors find many parallels to the deter-minants of taste, cultural discrimination, and choicewithin the field structure observed by Bourdieu in1960s French society. However, there are also somenotable differences in terms of the composition of cul-tural capital consistent with the concept of omnivo-rousness. The distribution of positions is largelydefined by patterns of taste that discriminate betweenrefinement, moderation, nurturance, and a communalorientation, on one side, and coarseness, excess, aggres-siveness, and an individual orientation, on the other.Historical and national differences partly account forthis variation, but a major role may be played by theincreasing formation of identities around media andconsumption, leading to a more gendered and ideolog-ical positioning of taste cultures in the U.S context.
